"Version 3.5 Works Great on Windows 8 Consumer Preview!"

Pros
classic Shell is an awesome program. I much prefer it to the Vista and Windows 7 Start Menus. It's tremendously customizable and you can export and import all the settings so that they can be applied to other computers and login ids. It also provides a great replacement for XP-style function buttons on Windows Explorer. Again, customizable and one can export and import settings. I use its Classic Explorer function to hook to a good third party filesystem search program to replace the excrable Vista/W7/W8 filesystem search.
But the best thing is that Classic Shell 3.5 puts its beautiful Start Menu on Windows 8 Consumer Preview, turning a sow's ear into a silk purse! Settings from W7 will even import into W8, providing instant customization.Cons

Summary
I have been using this program for quite a while now, and no 'hidden costs' have come up. This program is quite genuinely free to download, install, and use. Appears free of irritating attempts to install nonsense on your computer (after the installation process is complete), it tends to be the kind of program that can be installed and forgotten about (in a positive way!).
Would highly recommend to anyone who misses the xp features this program provides. -

The classic start menu is not included in Windows 7 like in Windows XP and Windows Vista. But this will put back both the classic and Windows XP start menu in all editions of Windows 7.So now you can have a REAL Windows XP or classic start menu.
Cons
None that I know. Classic Shell also come with Classic Explorer which just puts classic toolbar buttons in Windows Explorer. But it will not make your Windows Explorer look like Windows XPs with the big round folders.Maybe in future editions?

Classic Shell is for all editions of Windows 7,even Windows 7 starter. Puts the classic and Windows XP and Vista start menu into Windows 7.This is perfect for Windows 7 user who want the classic Windows 98 start menu and Windows XP start menu in Windows 7. For best effect,change your theme setting from Aero theme to windows Classic like I do. Then with this software-add the classic or Windows XP style start menu-which has the added bonus of a search bar with Windows 7s Windows search. And at first glance you Windows 7 will look like Windows 2000 or Windows XP! Wil also suit Windows 7 user who prfer to work in a Windows XP or Windows 2000 desktop and start menu environment like they are used to.And don't forget Classic Shell come also with Classic Explorer. But this does not change Windows Explorer but just puts classic toolbar buttons in explorer. I would love to have the Windows XP style Windows Explorer with the big round folders in Windows XP on my Windows 7. But I cannot find any software that will change Windows 7s Windows Explorer to Windows XP style folders and appearance.Maybe in the next version of Classic Shell perhaps? Andrea Borman.
there is other software that puts the classic start menu in Windows 7. But others are not free and do not work so good. This Classic Shell does. And Classic Explorer makes Windows Explorer more attractive. But would like to see a feature added that would change Windows Explorer completely to give you the Windows XP style Windows Explorer. You know,with those nice big round folders and maybe that fun search with the dog like on Windows XP.That would be perfect. Andrea Borman.

Pros
Makes the Windows 7 Start Menu Customizable to your needs. It looks much cleaner. Increases efficiency as well as making your desktop shortcuts unnecessary giving you a cleaner desktop.
Cons
It doesn't have a broad user base at this time. This comes into play when we talk of skins. Not many have been made at this time in such early stages of this program. Although detailed guides can be found at the program website on how to create them.
Summary
I highly recommend this software. Nothing out there right now can compete in ease of use and effectively solving your problems with the current Windows Start Menus. It's easily customizable to have everything you need at the click of an icon. The only draw back is the lack of skins(the start menu background). Although this does nothing to effect the overall functionality of the program.
