This free P2P application lets you find and download files using a unique system. On the left side of the three-pane interface, you choose from a long list of Web pages that contain files you can download. Different sites offer different types of files, and the subject matter is usually apparent by the name. When you opt to download a file, a smaller file appears on your desktop, which you then open in BitComet. After a bit of a wait, the application aggregates users that have your requested file and starts a swarm download that gradually grows in sources and speed. We like the enormous variety of files available for download, but aside from paging through categories, there are not many ways to search for specific files. Still, the addition of a preview function helps. The BitComet client offers chat capabilities, stats trackers, and the ability to bookmark your favorite sites. Overall, we think BitComet and the BitTorrent system are a great alternative to most file-sharing apps, and the fact that this download is free sure doesn't hurt.

    Version: BitComet 0.89

"CRAP! Get version .86 or use something else."

by revkevins on May 25, 2007

Pros: It's still BitComet, the one thing BitComet had when it first started out was that you didn't have to have a separate window open for each download, unlike BitTorrent. It's a good program with a simple interface, and until version .87 was my recomendation out of all the Torrent programs.

Cons: #1, and this one is one is a pretty big annoyance, ADVERTISING. I realize that yes, it's a free program, and a little advertising is acceptable, the advertising bar across the top never bothered me that much. Starting with the last version they added a more annoying advertising window, this one it gets even worse, there is an advertising window down the right side of the program that is SO BIG THAT THEY HAD TO REMOVE THE E.T.A. COLUMN. And you can move the border of it to shrink it, but if you minimize the program and then re-open it, it's back to it's original size. Why they couldn't do it as a banner is beyond me, at least they could have kept the ETA function and the advertising would have been a lot more subtle.

The other annoying feature they added on the last version was the "Recomend" thingy that pops up a whole list of movies to check out and takes up even more valuable screenspace. I wish they could have just left it as summary so you don't have to click on summary every time you open the program.

The addition of FlashGot to the program is pretty annoying as well. I've read some reviews saying it's a good program, but if I want it I'll friggin' download it. I didn't know what it was until I looked it up, I thought it was spyware.

So long story short, they took a good program and ruined it. Try to find version .86 or use an alternative like uTorrent, which I tried but didn't really like.

    Version: BitComet 0.89

    "Old versions better"

    by tony0964 on May 26, 2007

Pros: It's still BitComet, the best torrent program out there.

Cons: Why did they take out the upload and time remaining colums by default? These are much more useful than the comments or preview colums. And it was better when there was no ad on the right side on the screen.

    Version: BitComet 0.89

"This latest version is bulky, awkward, and monstrous."

by myplaceintime on May 28, 2007

Pros: I love Bit Torrent technology and what it has done for p2p sharing, and I had no problems with the OLD version of the BitComet software... in fact I loved it.

Cons: This new version with it's "improved" GUI is a bulky, confusing, advertising-riddled mistake that sucks up so much memory it frequently stops responding.

Apparently the programmers saw the need to take the simple, self-explanatory and generally great GUI that they had and replace it with an "idiot-friendly" one that only a die-hard AOL fan could appreciate.

Now the interface is a text-dense nightmare of useless advertising in the form of "related searches" links that don't actually relate to anything, memory-sapping charts and graphs that serve no practical purpose, and strange pre-programmed download paths that make it so you have to go digging through your C drive whenever you want to find a downloaded file.

Why didn't it allow me to keep my old file paths for temporary, shared, and completed downloads? Such a pain in the neck.

512 MG of SDRAM isn't top-of-the-line, but it SHOULD be enough to run a bittorrent client, or at least it always has been until this "upgrade." It ate up all the memory so that even when it was running without much interference (like at night when I was sleeping and it was the only thing open) it would simply stop responding, which of course meant it stopped downloading and uploading as well.

The new version also no longer allows you to simply right-click a task to delete it, and with the removal of the feature that allowed you to adjust the priority of different tasks, useful features were trashed while useless ones were introduced.

I was BitComet's biggest fan, but I no longer use their program. I hope I can find the old version somewhere, but it'll probably be simpler to download a competing piece of software instead.

I really don't understand what the programmers were thinking, but they took a wonderful program and loaded it with trash in the guise of "improvements" and made it a monstrosity that isn't worth a download.

    "OK, but I prefer FlashGet"

by firefox nut on June 5, 2007

Pros: Fast (erm, well), easy to use interface.

Cons: too many advertisements, and most of them very dirty stuff. Performance in downloading http also not too good. Even torrents weren't very fast although my connection is 512 kbps.

"Better than BitTorrent, but not by much"

by deleweye on May 25, 2007

Pros: Adequate bittorrent client - more reliable than the original with faster downloads - but see below -

Cons: Still crashes once or twice a day - instead of BitTorrent's periodic blue-screen-of-death, this garbage simply locks up the system requiring a cold reboot and often a system restore. Last couple of "updates" have also added a lot of ad-related crap and a couple of suspicious "browser add-ons". Better than no downloads, but like BitTorrent still nowhere near doing what it claims to.
