Publisher's description
From PG Music :Band-in-a-Box is an automatic-accompaniment program. You type in the chord symbols (C, Fm7, Cm7b5, and so on) to any song, choose a style, and press Play. Band-in-a-Box then generates a five-instrument accompaniment of bass, drums, piano, guitar, and strings in more than 100 styles of music. This upgrade to Band-in-a-Box includes a full featured digital audio track, so you can add live vocals or guitar playing to your song. There's also an intelligent style selection wizard that shows you what styles would work best in your song, highlighting all the styles that have a similar tempo, genre, and feel. Guitarists will love the guitar enhancements, tablature display, and a great automatic feature that creates a professional-quality guitar chord solo to any melody, displayed perfectly on the guitar fretboard. There's a new Big Lyrics Window with a selectable font and size, and a Big Piano Window that displays a piano with large keys and optional note names. For a screen shot, click here.
Note: The full version costs $88. This demo will expire on December 1, 2000.

"FANTASTIC! These guys deserve a prize!"
Pros: Wow! What a cool program. I have never seen a program, any program, that has this many features. The folks at PG Music must be a bunch of overachievers to put this thing together. I've been watching this program since it hit the market years ago and they keep making incredible strides with every addition. GOOD JOB. Basically, Band-in-a-Box is the ultimate songwriter's toolkit. Import (or type in) sheet music or just the chords and this bad boy starts playing the music including all of the bass, drum, keyboard, piano, and strings tracks. It even writes solos based on a groove criteria. The best part of this software is that it has literally hundreds of "groove templates" to direct a song in specific genres including jazz, blues, funk, rock, folk, and all of the levels inbetween. I would say this is crucial for anyone trying to learn how to play an instrument, because it creates instant accompaniement tracks that you can customize to solo over. I wish I had this program years ago when learning guitar...I would have been Jimi Hendrix by now.
Cons: I don't give 5 stars to programs that aren't free. Although I highly reccomend this download, just know that you will end up having to pay for it in the long run.

Version: Band-in-a-Box 9.0
Pros: This is a great program for those wanting someone or something to practice with, especially for jazz.. There are THOUSANDS of songs out there already put together that you can use to practice with. The sound is pretty good, though not as good as with many play-along CD's. Its real strength is its ability to allow you to easily change the tempo or key of the song. Entering lyrics and changing notes or chords is pretty easy as well. I think you can do that by midi input, but I haven't tried. You can also modify how it prints out music after a bit of a learning curve (fake book style, piano style, guitar chord and lyrics only..).
I like to sing and using this program in conjunction with the play-alongs I have works great. You can record yourself singing along if you like, but I haven't tried that yet.
It seems to be a strong program that has gradually improved itself over the years. To me this means that there are good people behind it and there will likely be support there if I need it. I used a friends software before buying it, so I don't know how limited the trial version is.
Cons: Bit of a learning curve to get all the goodies out of the program (adding lyrics, changing notes, printing out in different formats). Sound isn't as good as play-along CD's but what do you expect for a software program? Many songs in BIAB format don't have lyrics included, so you generally have to add them yourself. This may have more to do with copyrights than anything though, and it's better to have the music without the lyrics than not have it at all!
