CNET Editors' review
If you're looking for a quick and dirty way to create icons, Axialis IconWorkshop isn't it. If, however, you're in need of a full-featured program that will let you take your icon-making to the next level, this is the program for you. We've reviewed a lot of icon creation software, and Axialis IconWorkshop is definitely the most professional of the bunch.
The program's interface is sleek and well-designed, although it may seem a bit overwhelming to the uninitiated. The program's features are organized with panes and large, graphical buttons, and although the sheer number of features prevents it from being entirely intuitive, after a few uses it all starts to make sense. By far, our favorite thing about this program--something that's lacking from many of the other icon editors we've reviewed--is the incredibly detailed, lesson-filled Help file. It's well-written, contains plenty of screenshots, and will help even the novice user master the program's many features. Although the program will satisfy professional users, the Help file answers the question "What is an icon?" and builds from there, making this program appropriate for users of all levels. The program includes plenty of options for both creating icons from scratch and converting existing images to icons, and both Windows and Mac formats are supported. This program is not for the casual user, but the serious beginner and beyond will be pleased with it.
Axialis IconWorkshop has a 30-day trial period. It installs and uninstalls without issues. We recommend this program to all users.

"Great program! Creates icons perfectly. Easy to use."
Version: Axialis IconWorkshop 6.51
Pros
Easy to use and understand. Things are labeled great. Creates very nice icons, you can import images to creat icons out of or you can great one from scratch
Cons
I used the trial version so a lot of features are disabled, like better quality icons, etc. Not really a con but if you want to get the best looking icons and features, then you need to pay for the program.
Summary
I think this is a great program for creating your own icons. I was just trying to create an replacement icon for a program I use daily. I found a great image I wanted to use which was in .png format and just imported into this program and it took care of the rest. Really worked well.
