Publisher's description of Auto Volume Control
From United Research Labs:Solves the volume control problems for TVs, radio stations, CDs and Public Address systems. Now use your PC as a volume control device which stays between the audio input source (microphone) and the audio output source (speaker) all this software requires is a sound card with a line-in and line-out. No more be startled by obnoxiously loud commercials Keeps volume levels steady, so you won't be bothered by annoying volume dips or peaks. Versatile software works on any audio device, including TVs, radio stations, CDs and PA systems. Amazingly easy to use just set it and forget it. After a long day at the office, sometimes there's nothing better than sitting down in front of the tube and watching TV. That is, until the commercials blare on with enough volume to blow your hair back. But with this Automatic Volume Level Control software, everything you watch will always maintain the volume level that you decide. Now you'll never have to scramble for the remote every time a commercial louds.

Version: Auto Volume Control 2.0
Cons: This program is useless on any accounts. It does NOT control all in- and output channels and it also does NOT recognize if even the main volume gets actually louder than it should get, though that is what I actually expected this program might be able to do, to automatically control the volume.
Isn't that what you'd expect a program to do that's called "Auto Volume Control" ? Well, could've fooled me then.
I initially hoped it may be able to digitally analyze and predict acoustics and actually control the computer's main volume accordingly to prevent it from getting too loud (speaking of loudness), instead of just providing a linear percentage slider to manually control the main volume, which is essentially the SAME as the one already included in windows! But there's no additional "control" and certainly nothing "auto" to it. Having audio sources of different volume connected alongside had absolutely no effect on the resulting volume - it still blew up the same way it does without any control at all anyway. (At this point, I'm glad of having a full featured set of quality equipment available to my needs, so I surely won't pay $99 for NOTHING.)
There is no way of configuration available anywhere and that oh-so-magniloquent description is just too ridiculous to be called a "help", they could as well have included last years weather forecast instead, so I CAN'T even say that they did a viable job creating an otherwise useless volume slider replacement. They should at least have implemented SOME actual automation in the trial version, IF there is some in the full program (which i though doubt). I just see that as a very bad tactic to get people to throw away their money for crap, that doesn't do what it seems to by its description.
So if you're really up to doing those things as YOU like, it's much easier to have some main amplifier and equalizer (hardware!) to control each in- and output separately than to click some virtual sliders, which aren't comfortable and don't have any nice nor individual looks to them.

Cons: Two diodes, one in each polarity, '' ^v '' across each channel will CLIP voltage levels that exceed the crossover voltage of the diode type.
Germanium diodes will Clip at 0.240 volts.
