"Apple Inc's Remote [ver 1.2.1] is a good thing"

    June 24, 2009  |   By straightfingerwater

    Version: Apple Remote 1.2.1

    Pros

this FREE, 1.3MB download requires 4MB on the iPod or iPhone once installed. Secure setup for iPod touch or iPhone on home Wi-Fi networks. Set up is easy once the passcode pairing concept is understood.

    Cons

controls to shuffle an album, repeat a song, or skip to another track are all there...EXCEPT a working volume control.

    Summary

Remote is the most useful and convenient FREE application that I can remember using in a long time.

It is simple & well conceived. I wouldn?t think Apple is very interested in developing REMOTE too much farther than it has been.

HOWEVER: Building in all the controls necessary to remotely queue and control music playback of iTunes EXCEPT the iTunes application volume level seems like an unfortunate decision.

I?d be interested to hear the design reason for this. I would think many REMOTE end-users wonder about this too.

To add to this, the REMOTE designers included a large volume control graphic at the bottom of the main REMOTE screen display seen on iPod touch & iPhone end-users.

While this looks like you can use it, you can?t.

As I understand, the purpose of this is to provide the user with the a display for the present volume level setting of the iTunes PC that REMOTE-for-iPod touch & iPhone is remotely controlling

?But don?t we already know this since we are looking for a way to either turn-up or turn-down the iTunes master listening volume?

    System Requirements
    * for Remote (iTunes) - iPhone or iPod touch with software version 2.0 or later, iTunes 7.7 or later.

    * for Remote (Apple TV), iPhone or iPod touch with software version 2.0 or later , Apple TV with software version 2.1 or later.
