Editors' review

AnVir Task Manager Free offers users a one-stop shop for managing your system's running processes and applications. Though it more than delivers the information it promises, it could really benefit from a more streamlined interface.

Users will need to spend some time taking in AnVir's user interface, because at first glance it's overwhelming. It uses tabs to distinguish system categories, such as start-up, applications, processes, and services. Command buttons at the top of the window give you the ability to kill processes, block processes, free memory, and select a parent process. The bottom of the window details CPU, memory, and disk usage, but it's cluttered and hard to read. Mousing over the two taskbar shortcuts to find the same information is a bit easier. Each tab displayed a thorough listing of system information, but the navigation was awkward. For example, when we tried to select one of the processes listed, the program was slow to recognize our selection. The information window, detailing the specific selection, disappeared from view too easily with mouse movements. You can even use it to double-check if a program is infected with a virus against the online database VirusTotal.

AnVir Task Manager Free does offer help through its Web site, but novices might still have trouble navigating the busy interface. The paid upgrade offers even more features, such as a virus scanner and a memory optimizer. Nevertheless, the free version is a MacGuyver-esque tool for managing your system processes, and is really aimed at power users.

"Good for what it is, but you get malware too"

    August 07, 2014   |   By howardferns

Version: AnVir Task Manager Free 7.5.2

    Pros

I'm not a techie but I found the program easy to understand and navigate. Clear details are provided for any item, though I'd advise doing a search for any that aren't clear to you. You can always re-enable anything you disable. It found some keys that loaded for a program I haven't used for a couple of years, so I uninstalled that.

    Cons

Like a previous reviewer I downloaded from the maker's site and declined all the crap, but 24 hours later the machine I'd installed it on was running slow and jerky. On checking my programs I found remote desktop access software VuuPC had been installed without my knowledge on the same date, while a malware scan uncovered Adware.Zwangi

    Summary

Anvir might be a good program in its own right, possibly the best of its kind, but I can not recommend it for the reasons in Cons above. You also need to consider how often are you going to use it after your first check? Infrequently, I expect. If all you want is simple control of programs that run at startup, the tool in CCleaner is the best.

"For security, it's more useful than scanners."

    December 21, 2013   |   By LeeBonolo

Version: AnVir Task Manager Free 7.5.2

    Pros

It alerts you every time an item is added to start-up, and gives detailed information about start-up items and processes, so it's ideal for manually tracking and removing viruses.

    Cons

As others have mentioned, it does recommend some suspicious looking programs during installation. Make sure to uncheck them and you won't have any problems with the program itself.

    Summary

I install this on all my computers and would recommend it to everybody, especially if you like being informed and having control over your computer.

"As Always, Use Care When Downloading !"

    March 07, 2013   |   By tonester59

Version: AnVir Task Manager Free 7.5.2

    Pros

This is an extremely useful app when properly installed. It has a huge array of features - far too many to go into here. (also, see my previous review.) I tend to think of it as a "security task manager", since it checks your startup, and gives you a level of control you normally wouldn't have.

    Cons

Unfortunately, AnVir has partnered with some questionable companies that will try to download some real crap when installing the program. (as noted by the previous reviewer, a company's accounting dept. often has too big a say in how things are done.) Also, as also happened with my copy of Slim Cleaner, malware designed to disable security programs will sometimes disable or corrupt utility programs as well. This happened to my previous copy of AnVir TM.

    Summary

This is not a program you can download on auto-pilot, but I like it a lot so here's what I did: first, I went to the company's website (www.anvir.com) and checked it for safety. I was able to download the program directly from their site, and I carefully unchecked each box offering crapware. The installer complied and installed the program without issue or any additional components. Just to be sure, I then scanned the individual files, followed by complete system scans with my anti-virus and anti-spyware programs. Everything came up clean as a whistle. I took my time, paid attention, and got the app I wanted without any additional problems. Like someone once wrote (and I paraphrase), at times the biggest threat to our computer safety is right between our ears.
