Since Windows is designed to serve a wide range of users, it leaves room for improvement in areas like file copying. Copying speed in Windows largely depends on your system’s resources, but that’s where optimization can make a difference: by maximizing copying according to your system’s capabilities, it’s possible to copy even very large files faster than Windows alone.

Just how much faster? Up to eight times faster, according to Easersoft, makers of ExtremeCopy Free, which enhances copying speed based on your machine’s resources. The standard version is free for personal and home use, while a licensed Pro version offers additional features for commercial users. ExtremeCopy Free is available in specific downloads for both 32-bit and 64-bit Windows operating systems.

ExtremeCopy Free runs from the context menus in Explorer, once its options are configured, though it can also place an icon on the desktop unless you deselect that option. Clicking this icon produced a pop-up message informing us that ExtremeCopy lacks a standard user interface and instead operates from context menus, just like Windows’ built-in utility. However, the program offers a Configuration sheet that lets users set various options, including making it the default copying utility in Explorer, writing to a log file, updating, and setting it to always stay on top.

It includes a unique feature that displays the copying tool’s progress dialog on a specific desktop location. You drag the box to your desired spot and click OK; from then on, the dialog appears there. However, the OK button was inactive, leaving the tool inactive too, which seems to be a Pro feature. Other Pro-only features include the Copy Data Buffer Size selector, Same Name and Error Retry options, and the Max Failed Files in List box.

In addition to speed enhancements, ExtremeCopy Free offers a Break Point feature that allows users to pause and resume file transfers. This functionality is especially useful when encountering issues like locked files or unexpected interruptions. Once the problem is resolved, users can simply click the Continue button to resume the transfer from where it left off, ensuring a smooth and uninterrupted copying process.

While the free version of ExtremeCopy offers substantial benefits, there is also a Pro version available that includes additional features such as customizable copy tasks and the ability to copy to multiple destinations simultaneously.

The Free version, however, doesn’t sacrifice any of the program’s speed, as we observed when copying and moving various files and folders, including large video files. We could pause and resume the task as needed. When we compared it with Windows’ tool, ExtremeCopy proved faster. For those who frequently copy or back up large amounts of data, this program is worth considering.

Several alternatives to ExtremeCopy Free provide similar functionality and additional features for file transfer optimization. TeraCopy is a popular choice known for its error recovery feature and the ability to verify copied files for integrity. It integrates well with Windows Explorer and provides an intuitive interface. Another alternative, FastCopy, is recognized for its speed and lightweight design, offering advanced options such as customizable copy buffers and multi-threaded copying to enhance performance on large data transfers.

Bottom Line

To get the most from ExtremeCopy or similar utilities, configure the settings based on your computer’s specifications. Adjusting buffer sizes and enabling multi-threaded copying (if available) can enhance transfer speeds, especially on high-performance systems. For users transferring data frequently, consider setting the preferred tool as the default copy utility in Explorer, so it automatically manages copy tasks without extra clicks.

We recommend you to monitor progress indicators and time estimates to manage copy sessions efficiently, especially when copying sensitive or large data batches.
