This free, open-source word-processor strikes us as a worthy alternative to pricey, big-name products. AbiWord's interface is very similar to programs such as Word and WordPerfect, so the learning curve is quick. You'll find just about all the customary features you'd expect, including cut-and-paste, highlighting, and a bevy of common formatting tools. Although we did miss a grammar-checking utility, the program can check your spelling in many languages, though you'll need to choose the appropriate foreign language dictionaries during installation. A huge point in the program's favor is it can open and save Microsoft Word documents, though it also has its own proprietary file format. AbiWord should appeal to a wide range of users who seek a functional word-processing app, but lack a large bank account.Publisher's description
From AbiSource :AbiWord is a free open-source word-processing program similar to Microsoft Word. It is suitable for typing papers, letters, reports, and memos. AbiWord is able to read and write all industry-standard document types, such as OpenOffice.org documents, Microsoft Word documents, WordPerfect documents, Rich Text Format documents, and HTML Web pages. Give your document that professional, scientific, or fun-to-read look using AbiWord's advanced-document layout options. Use tables, bullets, lists, images, footnotes, endnotes, and styles to enhance the way your document looks.
AbiWord comes in many languages. AbiWord is available in most common and many not-so-common languages. Make sure your document contains none of those nasty spelling errors by using AbiWord's built-in spelling checker. Dictionaries exist for more than 30 languages. The main AbiWord program is very small and requires very little resources to run. Our plug-in system was designed to give AbiWord all the functionality you might expect from a modern Word Processor. A variety of plug-ins can be used to extend AbiWord's functionality, ranging from Document Importers to a Thesaurus, Image Importers, and a Text Summarizer.

Version: AbiWord 2.2.9
"Wow! Where did this thing come from?"
Pros: Two people in this house (me included) have been using this program for about a month. It's fast and has more than enough features. I also like OpenOffice, but if you just need a word processor, AbiWord is better.

Version: AbiWord 2.2.9
Pros: Fast, surprisingly featured and will meet the needs of most anyone in need of Word Processing software.
It's by no means as polished as Microsoft Word, but it does offer most of the features that most Word users ever need.
And unlike the very good (but bloated) OpenOffice.org this program loads very fast and is very lightweight.
You can download quite a few plugins to give you even more functionality.
Cons: Requires additional install of GTK2 libraries, not as polished as Microsoft Word 2003 (and to a lesser extent, OpenOffice.org 2.0.2).
Missing a few "enhanced" features found in Word (like "sparking" text).

Version: AbiWord 2.2.9
Pros: MS Word is the standard and is a very good and fast program. However, not everyone can afford to buy it. That is why I highly recommend this program. It's almost as fast as Word, it reads Word files, it has many of the same features and the one big thing... it's totally FREE! If you go to abisource.com, you can get the latest version. The version on here is a little dated. But even the dated version is a very good program.
Cons: Can't think of any

"great alternative to microsoft word"
Pros: i highly recommend this easy to use program. Especially if you are low on hard drive space and have a slower computer. It works like your basic word processor and has everything you will ever need in one.
Cons: none. i love this program
