AVG Anti-Spyware offers a high protection level, bolstered by useful features, for a reasonable cost. After 30 days, some of the features get disabled, but you're still able to search for and remove malware, and update definitions manually.

The tools performed well but aren't for the casual enthusiast. Besides the Scanner, which offers four levels of scanning plus a fully customizable fifth, the Resident Shield blocked all malicious components we tried to install, and we were impressed with the overall level of security the app provides: there's even a shredder that offers Fast, Secure, and Paranoid levels of deletion.

The diagnostic tools are spread through different tabs, so options clutter isn't an issue. Still, there's a lot to manage, from running processes to start-up entries to connections--but the program provides little information as to which items are potentially dangerous. In some cases, the program seemed to hog an inordinate amount of memory when its real-time shield was active.

The interface is mundane, with icons floating in a horizontal top-nav bar. The main Status window had quick link jumps to control the resident shield and automatic updates. Update contained proxy connection options, Analysis offered in-depth essential information not only on system processes but Internet connections, programs running from startup, browser plug-ins, and LSPs.

    "Lots of Potential,"

by canesrbad on February 11, 2007

Pros: AVG, "Grisoft", though well known for security software has what I consider a hit or miss app with their Anti-Spyware. This app has a huge signature database. Reasonably fast scan time and finds a lot that other well known anti-spy app's miss. But thats where the good ends. Unlike some claims of a 14 day trial, this app does have a full 30 day trial when downloaded from the "Grisoft" web site, and is worth a test.

Cons: But, this app still has a long way to go before it becomes worth purchasing. It is the last app to load on windows start-up. Recource usage is higher than some other like app's. And though it finds a lot of spyware, adware ect., it lacks the ability to stop some of the worst from getting into a computer. Also, like some other reviewer claims it "DOES NOT CLEAN (DELETE)" some of these. Myself, like another claim, had one that "AVG AS" found but did not clean. Upon restart and a second scan it was still there. This app has lots of potential and may be worth a purchase to some but, as to myself, there are at least three others that I would recomend before this app. The non delete I encountered while testing this app has left a bad taste in my mouth. If you are shopping for a truley good anti-spy, anti-malware app, get "Counter Spy" by "Sunbelt Software" ($19.95 - cheap) or "A-Squared 2.1" by "Emsisoft" ($39.95

expensive). Both provide excellent active protection and have the ability to clean the worst spyware and malware out there.

    "Formerly "Ewido 4.0""

by UM Canes on November 30, 2006

Pros: I purchased this product when it was "Ewido" and liked it very much. Depended on it for active protection and all. Supposedly after reading reviews on other forumns the newer app., AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 is better. (supposedly) I was advised that my "Ewido" license would transfer. (it did). everything O.K. so far right? Wrong! After the merger or buy out by "Grissoft" the signature database increased to more than 500,000 signatures. To big for an anti spy app. Ran a scan and it found C:/System_Volume_restorexxxxxx as a high risk. Now I know nasties can hide there but this one was my IE saved screen names and passwords. I didn't realize it at first so I let the app. delete the supposed trojan. WRONG!!!

Cons: False positive raised hell with my IE. Grown to big for an anti-spy app and can no longer be trusted period. Very disapointed with what "Grissoft" has done to my favorite anti-spy app. I can no longer in good concience recomend this app. Took me 45 min. to repair my IE. Confirmed the false pos. by running my other apps whis=ch found nothing!

"Nice Product and very Thorough Scanning"

by QuentinTarantino on December 17, 2006

Pros: Scanned 250,000 files in 22 minutes.I like the fact you can click on any file and scan the file instantly.Nice interface and very easy to understand.

Cons: Sadly there had to be a downfall.I noticed a remarkable difference in my speed,it slowed it right down.I have an 8 meg connection and with AVG is slowed down to half of that.I uninstalled and the pc is up to full speed.Shame really ,as I liked it.

"I was beginning to think it was a forgotten application."

    by Chainmail2006 on August 12, 2007

Pros: But, all of the sudden, it works with "Vista"? Maybe the acquisition of "Ewido" wasn't so bad after all. It certainly has a huge signature file and a great detection rate on spyware, trojans, malware, adware and cookies. It does open faster on "Vista" then it ever did on "XP". Maybe thats because "Vista" computers are more powerful. I can give it 3.5 stars without a thought but it still has a couple big problem.

Cons: It lacks in the removal capability department. If it had better shielding, maybe the bad things it has trouble removing wouldn't get in in the first place. But, it does leave an infection behind once in a while even though it says it was deleted. A second scan proved it to me. It's to expensive for this type application. "Counter Spy" sells for half the price and is more effective. For the money, thats what I recommend.
