Publisher's description of AOL Pagetest
AOL Pagetest is a completely free and open source tool for analyzing your Web pages. It is the only free too for Internet Explorer that dissects all of the requests the browser makes and displays them in a waterfall view of the page load making it easy to spot bottlenecks. Included in the waterfall display are the DNS lookup times, Socket connect times as well as each http request. It also provides the fule request and response headers for each request.
Unique to page test is an Optimization Checklist that scores your web pages against 8 basic rules for fast web sites (expires headers for static content, using a CDN, Combining CSS/JS files, GZipping text, proper image compression, persistent connections, judicious cookie usage and minifying html and js). It can even save the checklist as a text report that provides you a punch list of things to fix. Version 2.0.0.172 has Tabs were added to the main screen for switching views; HTTPS requests now get a lock indicator; The "Combine CSS/JS" check now only checks for requests that are initiated before the page starts to render (now correctly ignoring deferred requests); The scores for GZip, Image Compression and Minification were changed and now reflect the actual byte savings that could be achieved.
