CNET Editors' review
DreamQuest's 100% Free 500 Card Game for Windows is an excellent teaching and playing program for this classic Australian game. With helpful tutorials and professional play, you can quickly master "500," a blend of spades and euchre that is Australia's national card game.
The program's interface instantly won us over, even though we had no prior experience with 500. Its colorful, professional design was matched by a fantastic tutorial that taught us the rules and nuances of the game. This single-human, three-computer-player game was quick to pick up and fun to play. We enjoyed choosing between a few dozen opponents with different skill levels so we could stay constantly challenged, as their play was full of almost human idiosyncrasies throughout the game. During game play, we were able to draw cards, bid, and score all by using the mouse and a little knowledge. We instantly enjoyed playing and had no trouble following the action. One interesting feature was the program's different settings. While Australian Rules was the traditional form, it offers four other styles to choose from, each with equally helpful explanations of the rules and techniques. With its great looks, smooth play, and in-depth tutorials, this is a great game for card lovers.
DreamQuest's 100% Free 500 Card Game for Windows is a freeware program. Its excellent tutorials and simple game play make it a great program. It's ready for Windows 7, too.

"Unrealistic game play"
Version: 100% Free 500 Card Game for Windows 7.30
Pros
Great interface - easy to use
Cons
Gameplay is completely unrealistic
Summary
I've only played the trial version - and I was really hoping this would be a keeper. Unfortunately, as a seasoned and regular 500 player, I found the playing ultimately frustrating.
The opponents always seem to have terrific hands - and they play as though they know exactly which cards every other player is holding - all the time. They always seem to be able to completely shortsuit (which is NOT always possible) and lead cards that should only win a hand occasionally.
Your partner often plays poorly, and loses badly on bids that, in hindsight on seeing his cards, are just ridiculous. I've also had situations where, after leading with a bower, he's trumped over me with the other bower - even though he has lesser cards which he has then led back to me.
Although I am aware that you can set custom rules on the full version (and I haven't been able to see that in action) the so called 'standard Australian' rules have oddities that I have never encountered once. And I've played the game for well over 25 years. Generally you can't bid Misere until someone else has bid 7 of something, and Open Misere can undertaken when the bidding has reached 8 or Misere. The Joker can be used first or last of a suit, but doesn't HAVE to be played - and yet my partner often prevent us shooting down a Misere by playing it when you don't have to.
Sorry, Dreamquest, this game just doesn't cut it. Not only am I not going to register and buy a copy, I'm going to delete the trial copy I do have on my hard disk.
Does anyone know of a decent 500 game? (Please don't mention the older Special K version) -
"If they are smart they will fix the Win 7 install"
Version: 100% Free 500 Card Game for Windows 7.30
Pros
works on older computers
Cons
I had to use an XP virtual machiene to install. Most new computers are sold with Win 7 x64, this a major flaw with it's install package. Most people will not bother installing this on a newer computer as the installer package will not work.

"Flat out fun"
Version: 100% Free 500 Card Game for Windows 7.30
Pros
It is designed well, and is a fun game I would have probably never heard of otherwise.
Cons
cannot turn off sound.
Summary
I have found ALL of the "100% Free" games are excellent. There are upgrade notices BETWEEN some of the games - but NOT in the middle of them. A couple of spacebar taps and you're through them.
...and AUTO PLAYOUT is the coolest feature! When you know the outcome of the game (like you hold all of the cards, or sadly, none of the cards), it is nice to right click the game board and select Computer Playout. Speeds up the mundane. I really miss that feature on most games that are out there.
People who can't install, shouldn't rate products; a significant time it is them, not the software that causes the problem. I've downloaded this and seveal other "100% Free" games on several different computers with no issues. Too bad that is the only basis for a rating. Better to not leave one at all.

"Won't Install on W-7 64-bit OS"
Version: 100% Free 500 Card Game for Windows 7.30
Pros
Same problem as a previous user. The program complains that it can't write
file c:\xxx\appdata\temp\FF_Toolbar_install.exe
I executed this file manually, but it still did not help. The install program simply stops responding.Cons
I run this program on W-XP Pro SP3 and it is great. Love the game, please contact game Co. and see if they can fix this problem for the 64-bit W7 OS.
Summary
I fought this installation for a while....I love this game. Got a brilliant? Idea to take the installed copy from my W-XP.SP3 machine. I copied the entire folder from the Program Files folder. The folder is called Free Five Hundred. I copied it into W7-64 Program Files (x86) and then created a desktop shortcut to the Free600.exe file. Then I ran the program... and lo and behold it worked.

"freeby is not the real thing. Only a partial"
Version: 100% Free 500 Card Game for Windows 7.30
Pros
The original game I had was good before all the upgrades.
Cons
I bought the original and when I changed to a new pc and tried to reload it, Dreamquest refuses to allow it without an upgrade. Which costs the price of the game again.
Summary
I owned three of Dreamquests games and they wouldn't reload any of them when I bought a new pc. I tried to reload them myself and it went right to the dqsoft page and refused.

"Can't review. Won't install."
Version: 100% Free 500 Card Game for Windows 7.30
Pros
No pros as I can't get it installed
Cons
No cons as I can't get it installed
Summary
Could not review the product as the installation stops responding when it tries to install some FF_ toolbar_install.exe? Is this even part of the game? This is in Windows 7 - 64 bit OS. File run as Administrator. Gave up after second download and numerous installation tries.
