Editors’ Review
There is nothing more unsettling than software that promises to change more than 500 Windows Registry settings with a single click, and in the case of this software, that concern is well founded. XPTune's simple interface doesn't bode well for advanced users. There is a bare minimum of information displayed with memory and hard drive space listed. The screen displays 11 areas the program will improve with no mention what each changes. Checking the default settings function pops up a dialog that warns that the user may be required to supply the original operating system disk.
Clicking Optimize is a leap of faith as XPTune offers no help file, documentation, or tooltip detailing what is tested and changed. Nor can users pick and choose among the 11 test areas. The program doesn't offer users a method to store a backup of the Registry. There isn't an undo function available, and it is needed. It's a simple statement that there are no good one-size-fits-all optimization tools. Every home system is unique, and even system administrators know cloned machines develop unique characteristics.
Though novice users may favor a single-click optimization tool, we can't recommend XPTune. There are too many variables we'd like to check before changes are made to the Registry. Also, there is no reason not to include an undo function in a program that alters the Registry. This tool poses more risks than benefits, and there are better options on the market.
