Windows Communicator is a freeware chat client for LANs, based on a 'flying' server. You don't have to connect to any dedicated server; one of your LAN (or Internet) Windows Communicator friends will 'host' the connection. Your client will automatically find and connect to this server.
I reccomend this for everyone! Don't Listen to those Bad reviews... I have had no problem.

Very nice! Sent this guy a donation because he deserves it. Been using this app for over a year now and have never had a problem with it. Nice for remote monitoring and managing computers over the network (remote shutdown, end application, etc.) Real nice

I would really discourage anyone from using this. The documentation talks about installing the program on a "victims" machine, logging keys etc.
It installs a window hook into all open windowbased processes, in order to spy in on events.
Furthermore, this is the first program I have ever encountered that alters the precision on the FPU.
(Curious programmers can reset it with:
_controlfp(_CW_DEFAULT, 0xfffff);)
Some of the features sound fine, but be aware of the risks.

Really nice features, detailed manual, ability to operate message window from almost completely transparent to solid over open windows, allowing you to keep the application on top if preferred. Too many features to list and the best free program of its kind I've run across. Speaking of the manual, you will have to do just a little mental editing due to the fact that the author appears to be Eastern European. This does not affect the application itself though which is very well done. You can also choose among serveral (at least 9, I think) languages to run the app in. I can't say enough about this program.
best i have ever used
