New document file formats are always cropping up, and on the whole that's a good thing; specialized formats reflect evolving technology. The only real drawback is that in order to make use of these new formats, you often need viewers or players that you don't already have. And who wants a hard drive crammed with software that can only do one thing? STDU Viewer attempts to solve this problem by letting you view a variety of file formats all in one simple program.

STDU Viewer's interface is plain and looks a lot like other document viewers, with a main display pane, a few menus, and a toolbar. It's very much like a basic PDF viewer, but in addition to PDF files it can also handle TIFF, DjVu, text files, Open XML Paper Specification, Comic Book Archive files, JBIG2 files, and a variety of image formats. The program supports bookmarking and has a handful of other basic features, including text and image selection, zooming, full-screen views, and the ability to search within documents. Although for the most part the program is quite intuitive and will be familiar to anyone who's used a document viewer before, we do wish that the program came with a Help file. Overall, STDU Viewer didn't knock our socks off, but it is a nice choice for people who need to view some of the less-common document formats that aren't supported by the average document viewer.

STDU Viewer installs and uninstalls without issues. We recommend this program to everyone.

Slow scrolling

Pros
It opens files in XPS, Djvu, PDF and other formats. The text of a black&white djvu document in STDU Viewer looks better than the same text in WinDjView.
Cons
The scrolling of a black&white djvu document in STDU Viewer is much slower compared with the scrolling of the same document in WinDjView. The scrolling of a PDF document in STDU Viewer is slower compared with the scrolling of the same document in Adobe Reader. The text in Adobe Reader looks clearer. According to the system requirements from the homepage of this program, 1 GHz Intel processor is enough. I'm using a 2.2 GHz Intel processor.

Pros
Handles all formats including the comic book CBA and CBR as well as the thinking person's PDF, djv (DJVU). It's much easier to navigate a multi-page document in STDU rahter than in a word processing program or a PDF viewer.

None that I can see. This one-trick pony does what it does.

Summary
STDU is a great little file viewer for windows that isn't really bloated. It is under 3 megabytes and yet views all the files you need it to, but it isn't open source, which I don't really understand, because they are giving it away for free, but oh well, it is still free to download, and as long as you are not taking it apart, you are using it legally.
