Ken Rename from Kensoft is a free batch file renamer that offers a lot of configuration options and enables you to replace strings, reorder and renumber files, remove and insert specific characters from files, decode files, and create macros to perform batch processes automatically. It includes extra features such as picture previews, EXIF support, and import/export capabilities.

At first glance, Ken Rename's red-bordered interface seems busy, but it actually does a capable job of managing a lot of features in a limited space, with a file menu and toolbar along the top, a tabbed selection of functions, and a left-hand tree view and main window with list view along the bottom. Dividing the interface in the middle is a file-selection tool with a Wildcard filter, Include and Exclude options, and the ability to specify RegEx. Basically, everything below and including the file section displays files and folders, while the tabbed section is where you perform many and various actions, from creating Macros with counter, digit, and increment options as well as MP3 Tags, EXIF, and Extension options, to Script, with a text field, to Code Page, with a variety of source and destination options, including Unicode, Windows, Big5, and GBK. We could also import lists, select HTML, HTTP, and URL encode and decode options, and change cases. The program's Web page offers some documentation and tips as well as a forum, but there's no proper Help file, though a program that offers so many options could benefit from one.

Nevertheless, we found Ken Rename a capable performer and easy enough to use, once we'd reviewed and made our option choices. This is a powerful tool that can dramatically speed up large batch-processing jobs, and we only scratched the surface of its abilities.
