This tiny freeware utility checks the validity of downloaded files by quickly comparing the files to previously generated checksums, though it can't check complete folders. With MD5 Checker's ultrasimple interface, you can easily browse for files to validate, or generate MD5 checksums. Using the program is merely a matter of pointing the program to the file of your download. The program rapidly computes the checksum of a file and quickly compares that value to the expected checksum. The program clearly indicates checksum values as matched or mismatched. However, MD5 Checker works only with files and can't check a folder of files with a single click. Even so, software developers who download from services that include checksum files will want this freeware application in their toolboxes.

If you use the Direct download link you get just the software. This little program works great. Download, unzip and execute. Just that simple. Don't pay attention to the negative reviews. Use the Direct download link NOT the CNET link.
Cons
NONE if you use the Direct download link. Wish they had a Mac version that was this simple.

Easily found; the first result when I searched for "MD5 checker"

That Pro means nothing, as when I browsed for the ZIP file I wanted to check, it didn't see it. Now that I think of it, the installer was probably the reason Chrome crashed, accompanied by three problems: a malware extension "We-Care Reminder" which does not allow the user do disable or remove it was added to Chrome, as well as a less malicious extension which changed the default search engine. The third problem was that when Chrome crashed, I lost the page that was showing the MD5 code, so when I reloaded it, I don't know if it was the same one.

Stay away from this! CNET, PLEASE remove this malware spreader!

Bloatware in the installer. Check your Browser Add-ins if you use it even if you tell it not to install anything.

I'm running XP and wanted to check a few downloads for authenticity. I downloaded this, and ran it, and followed the directions. They should tell you to not run the MD5 checker against the app unless you make a copy of it, run the copy, and check the md5.exe... Otherwise, the program crashes because the file is open. However, the author says it can check files over 2GB. I had no luck. I've got a 4.5GB file, and about a third of the way through checking it the progress bar stopped. 5 minutes later I ended the task.

I gave up on my attempt to install the MD5 checker because the only download I could find was Cnet's own Download Manager. That's the last thing I want - ANOTHER HELPFUL DOWNLOADER!

MD5 Checker 2.31 - 18th February 2007. Utility to verify downloads with an MD5 checksum from the makers of MidWavi Pro (it's only 100K and this is a true Windows program). Tiny (100K unzipped) full Windows program to verify (and create) MD5 checksums (that is, where an MD5 code is given for a download file, using this software, if the codes match, the download is good). You can also create your own MD5 checksum if required.
