• The Logbook that time forgot

  Pros

  Stable windows platform that works OK for common US pilot logging needs.

  Cons

  Does not work with Mac. Does not have functioning droid, iPhone, tablet or iPad sync options. Gets expensive as you have to pay every year for basic continuing functions. $30 for a year of sync? And even with sync, the mobile apps don't natively compute flight or duty time limitations that commercial pilots need.

  Summary

  Logbook Pro has the flat tired feel of a Microsoft program from the 1990s. It worked fine 10 years ago, but hasn't taken any advantage of the increases in computing power or mobility since then. Lots of pilots used to use this program with a Palm Pilot app that worked great. But the developer has never duplicated the functionality of that app for droid or iPhone. No one I fly with uses it now. Many have switched to LogTen, which does a lot of amazing cool stuff (automatically calculates night time based on knowing the airport's coords and the OOOI times or allowing you to add photos). With no 30/7 functionality on the mobile apps, the yearly $$$ for required subscriptions, and the lack of new features, this seems to be an old program on the decline.

• Pilots: Beware of doing business with this company...

  Lots of good marketing.

  In my opinion, this company engages in sleazy business practices, including keeping your $ when you buy a product from them that doesn't work. Beware...

  Summary

  If you are using a Mac, their software doesn't work "natively" but even if you never ran what you downloaded, (because you can't use it) they will keep an administrative fee of 15% to punish you. That is low-down and sleazy in my opinion. Beware...

• Product only fair, and company not reputable

  Pros

  If you are familiar with MS Access, the screns will look pretty familiar. Ease of use if 3 out of 5 stars.

  Cons

  Neither interface nor feature set appear to have been updated in years. The only saving grace is thier iPhone app which also has some limitations. Recommend any other option before this one.

  Summary

  Although product is ok, the product and customer service are not at all easy to work with. As per other reviews on other sites (wish i would have read them first), the company policies and practices make them terible to work with. This product will cost you many times what it is worth. Look for any other product before committing $$ to this company.

• Great Pilot Logbook program

  Pros

  Lot's of report options and customizability. Easy data entry either in spreadsheet format or form format. Easy to use and setup currency reminders, include expense tracking and flight costs. Amazing customer service. Free upgrades.

  Cons

  Not visually appealing, looks too 'Access' like. Needs some more individuality and not like simply a database program.

  Summary

  The customer service with this product is great, purchased originally in 2003 and lost the program, my data and activiation key. Company immediately responded and advised how to reobtain my key and download the newest program. No need to repurchase even though I was going from a 7 year old version to the most recent. Nothing has chnaged visually however from what I recall on the older versions. The program does what it's meant to do, keep track of your flying data like a paper logbook. Provides a great backup option as well as an amazing array of reports. So far one of the best I've seen. It's easy to maintain an 'electronic' logbook with spreadsheet or database programs, but it would take you a long time to implement all the functionality that NC software has in this.

  Pros

  Well, a few good things. The thing is flexible. You can add custom fields almost as much as you want. You can also configure a lot of how the program runs.

  Cons

  Unfortunately, it's not really good for pilots that aren't database experts. The feel of the product is that you have been dumped into a massive database and you have to be careful to hit the right button/icon/gadget to try to do what you want. <p> <p>Some aspects of the program seem not to be designed specifically for pilots. For example, pilot certificates are just held in a list with names that you can make up. No program savviness that a Commerical Pilot license is different from a Private Pilot license. The list of certificates you create is not linked in any way with the random list of ratings that you create. No recognition that ratings are tied to certificates at all. Did pilots even help right this program? If I wanted to keep handwritten lists of things, I'd do it on paper. <p> <p>Beyond the confusing user interface, there were quirks that just bothered me. For $120, I would expect the thing to understand how pilot medical certificates worked. In the demo, they show how you should manually go in and change your handtyped entry of your First Class medical exam and edit the expiration date yourself when after six months it still allows Commercial Pilot privileges. By hand? Are you kidding me? <p> <p>Clearly, some database expert spent some time tweaking a big, flat database so that it would generate some reports, but the usability of the thing isn't what a normal pilot would expect.
