• Stunning freeware

  Pros

  With a number of similar programs to choose from this was the very first one I tried, after I read that it only indexes folders you select and not the entire computer. I am not looking any further!!! The search is blisteringly fast. Not only words from docs and pdfs, it even finds text that is in clips and screen captures on my portable notekeeper in Dropbox, and it will bring up names in jpeg photos too, if you index them. Double-click on a result and the doc, pdf, jpeg or whatever will open.

  Cons

  Folders of docs and pdfs were no trouble but trying to index too many jpegs at once crashed it, so I had to load them folder by folder. This process is a bit tedious when you have a number to do, and it could do with a hotkey. Once you're done, though, updating changes is much simpler.

  Summary

  I have a great number of files on my computer relating to an interest of mine. Finding data was becoming increasingly difficult, with inconsistent results from both Windows Search and FileFinder Lite, while my own homebuilt index was getting too complex and time-consuming to maintain. DocFetcher has relieved me of any more worries.<br /><br /><span class='notifyMsg'> Updated </span>on Nov 8, 2013<p/>It was incorrect of me to say that DocFetcher was finding text from files in my notekeeper. The file types are not supported and what was being found was from duplicates elsehere in my system. I should have added to my review that the software is very slow to download, and after you've waited some minutes it hangs just before it is finished. This happened to me with installation on two computers. Persevere and you'll get it in the end, if really stuck search for different downloads or mirrors.

• Better than the organic search function in Windows7

  1. I could not download this program from the parent site. No idea why. But it downloaded from CNET. 2.Not designed for searching programs. 3. It's user reviews state that it doesn't allow searches by path (fragments of file name). Don't know if this is true or not. 4. Won't search encrypted documents. I suppose this is a plus, not a minus. Any encryption that DocFinder can crack is not good encryption!

  Summary

  My program of choice. I tried a few programs. This works best.

• Don't Bother Installing This DocFetcher Dud!

  Summary

  My DocFetcher Review... (Negative Stars for this Dud!) Omen No. 1: The developer's website to download this program from (sourceforge.net) had no further information about it. No install instructions, nothing about the program's usage, etc. I should have known better; but unfortunately I uninstalled anyway. :( Omen No. 2: DocFetcher suddenly stalled my computer during the initial installation process and I consequently couldn't use either the mouse, keyboard shortcuts etc. for about two minutes. After that a popup stated something like "Installation Complete. Restart the Computer." Omen No. 3: Upon restarting the computer the dreaded Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) Appeared. When I restarted the computer again - this time in safe mode - the DocFetcher was indeed installed in the Program Files folder all right; however clicking on the program application proved fruitless. I then used the shareware program called Your Uninstaller! 2008 in order to uninstall DocFetcher; which consequently left tons of leftover junk files in the Windows registry. I subsequently removed the registry junk files using the CCleaner freeware program registry cleaning function. I Repeat: Don't Bother Installing This DocFetcher Dud!
