File Property Edit Free from Foryoursoft is a free tool that can alter file attributes such as the date and time a file was created or last modified, either singly or in batches. It's a stripped-down version of a "Pro" shareware tool. While it's fully functional and requires no purchase or registration to use its available features, some useful functions are only available in the paid version, such as Undo Changes, Export, and Change Other Properties.

During the installation, a nag screen informed us that we could purchase the Pro version at a discount. File Property Edit Free has an attractive, efficient layout, with an integrated shell color tool next to the button accessing the online Help file. However, there seem to be no options or settings beyond what's available on the interface, and many of those aren't accessible in the freeware version. Controls allow us to add and filter files, select all, change file times in predetermined or custom methods, and perform a few other basic functions.

With drag-and-drop support, users can easily add multiple files or folders to the list for batch editing. The Free version allows up to 100 files to be added at once, while the Pro version offers unlimited support.

In addition to the previously mentioned disabled functions, we couldn't use the Quickview or Add Variable functions, nor could we access any of the subfeatures of the disabled tools. Nevertheless, we were able to browse and add files, quickly changing the file timestamp from a drop-down list or by entering custom time and date settings. 

We could also change the following file attributes: Archive, ReadOnly, Hidden, System, Temporary, Offline, NotContentIndexed, and Normal. The tool processed a folder full of images in no time. Checking showed that File Property Edit Free had done its job; when we opened the properties sheet for an image, it displayed a creation time of hours ago, not months ago when we originally downloaded it.

For media files, File Property Edit allows users to edit MP3 ID3 tags (versions V1 and V2), photo EXIF properties, and AVI RIFF Info tags, such as title, copyright, and year. This feature is beneficial for users working with multimedia content, allowing precise control over metadata. It also includes options to adjust document properties like title, subject, author, keywords, and comments, making it suitable for organizing document libraries.

Another useful function is the Undo feature, which allows users to revert changes if needed, ensuring that any modifications can be rolled back. This is particularly valuable for users handling sensitive data, where precision is essential. Users can also export file properties into XML or CSV files.
