SyncToy is an application that synchronizes files and folders between locations. Typical uses include sharing files, such as photos, with other computers and creating backup copies of files and folders. It is an easy to use, highly customizable program that helps users to do the heavy lifting involved with the copying, moving, and synchronization of different directories. SyncToy can manage multiple sets of folders at the same time; it can combine files from two folders in one case, and mimic renames and deletes in another case. SyncToy actually keeps track of renames to files and will make sure those changes get carried over to the synchronized folder.
Unstable and Undependable. DirSync Pro is much better.

Pros
Brain-dead simple.
Cons
Unstable and undependable.
Summary
This used to be a decent program but, on several machines, it has lost its mind and refused to work properly. I couldn't trust that it was syncing properly, and had to constantly check the destination to see if it had the current sync file. In most cases toward the end of my using the program, there were multiple instances of files that had no been synced. If I can't trust it, I'm not interested.
DirSync Pro is a much better utility, and is also free. It's also maintained and supported.

Summary
I own an Hp desktop, with a Tb hard drive, and 10 gigs of ram, running Windows 7. I Never have software problems, as I use this for my music production company. I installed this pile of c r a p. Upon opening, I got error message, "Cannot read from the source file System Volume Information\. Access is denied. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80070005." Ok, well, I'll reboot. Nothing, except now my 30" monitor was blinking. Ok, I'll uninstall it. Nope. Uninstall registered the same error message. How does uninstall give an error message?
I searched the net, and made phone calls for a solution. I heard the same nightmares from several other victims.
I did a Windows system restore to get exorcise the demon software. Thank God it worked!
BE CAREFUL!! DON'T DOWNLOAD THIS COMPLETE PIECE OF JUNK!
Stay Away! It doesn't work!

Pros
The software is free.
Cons
It doesn't work!
After I used the program I compared the two dirs with winmerge and I found a lot of flaws.
Just don't waste your time!
I am trying freefilesync, it seems to work, but I haven't finished my test.
Summary
It doesn't work!
Nice software for unattended data backup
positronic
Pros
Free, Windows 7 has backup software built-in but the Home version doesn't allow saving to a network drive, only USB or internal drives so this software will fill the gap.
Cons
Setting up automated daily backups needs to be done through the Windows Scheduler program. Not intuitive, need to look it up in help to find out how.
Summary
Outside of looking up how to schedule it, it's a great app for syncing up folders between computers or for backup.
Great software!

Pros
This is great software if you need to sync up several folders and/or hard drives. It does exactly what it says and it's totally free.
Cons
If you plug in external drives and if they change letters for some reason, Synctoy has to be re-setup for the new drive letters.
Summary
I would highly recommend this software. Even if you don't like it, it's free. Oh, did I mention that it's free?
