JDiskReport is a free Java-based tool that displays the size, capacity, free space, and other parameters of your files, folders, and directories. You can display data in different views and rapidly switch between them. To use it, you must have an up-to-date version of Java installed, but of course that's free.

JDiskReport starts by scanning either a selected tree directory or your C drive; we chose the latter. We could save and reopen scans, too. JDiskReport displays a folder tree view in the left-hand panel and five tabs in the main window: Size, Top 50, Size Distribution, Modified, and Types. Some displayed pie charts and others bar graphs, but each offered a series of icons along the bottom of the main window for switching between several chart, graph, and list styles, except the Top 50 list view, which switches between Largest, Oldest, and Newest. All the views are useful; under Types, we learned our system had more .dlls than any other file type; 11.5GB of them. We could change the views from file size to numbers, sort by size and name, and copy the table to the clipboard from the View menu. The Options include Look & Feel, Filters, and Commands.

We had some issues when installing and running JDiskReport in 64-bit Windows 7, which seemed to be related to the location of the Java file; an issue that persisted when reopening the program. We were also unable to open JDiskReport from inside Windows shell context menus. Although the program showed up in context menus, clicking the entry produced an Application Not Found error message. The documentation makes no mention of an issue with 64-bit systems, so it may be a Java-related issue. At any rate, the difficulties we experienced with what should have been a very simple tool leave us in a quandary. On the one hand, we really like JDiskReport's data displays. On the other hand, we can't very well recommend software that might give significant numbers of users some headaches. Perhaps one of JDiskReport's frequent updates will answer our concerns.

Another fix for context menu and app shortcut

As it's based on java's moving target, is a bit of a pain to keep it running. I found a Windows 7 Pro 32-bit solution for JDiskReport 1.4.1 to that offered for the 64-bit solution by halemos on February 07, 2013
Summary
You'll need to edit the properties of the original shortcut to use the application in standalone mode. You'll also need to edit (carefully) one registry setting to use the application via the context menu. In both cases the edit is very similar. Edit the application shortcut: Change the default "Target" from: c:\windows\system32\javaw.exe To: C:\ProgramData\Oracle\Java\javapath\javaw.exe As always when editting the registry, be careful..... To enable the context menu to work, edit the following registry key: Computer\HKEY_CLASSES\Root\Folder\shell\JDiskReport 1.4.1\command (Default)... open the key, look at the path, make the same edit... prepend C:\ProgramData\Oracle\Java\javapath\ to the javaw.exe already there. Hope this helps....

The visual presentation of the files is very logical and intuitive. It's really easy to see where your files are. Plus, considering the program is free, the author is surprisingly responsive.

The Windows 7 issue was aggravating until I found a solution. The problem should have been fixed by now.
Summary
If you're not comfortable editing the registry, all you have to do is copy the latest version of javaw.exe to the \windows\system32 folder in Windows 7. The solution above is better because javaw.exe will be updated when Java is updated. With the solution I suggested, you will want to remember to copy a new version in system32 periodically. I install this utility on every computer and recommend that my friends do the same. There are similar utilities, but the interface on this one is very easy to understand. I like it.

Very quick way to see file statistics.
Cons
The "Top 50" Feature is considerably limiting (when statistics for everything is desired). Could us a "Custom" way of collecting statistics for use in another program (like Excel) when ALL file info is needed.
