Although this basic educational program promises to teach young children basic colors, shapes, musical notes, and computer use, it doesn't live up to expectations. Children Learning Essentials includes a colorful and animated interface that offers three narrow categories: colors, shapes, and music. Unfortunately, the color selection is limited to black, white, red, yellow, and blue. Likewise, shapes are limited to circles, triangles, and squares and the only musical notes are F, A, and C. There also is an annoyingly loud clapping sound that plays after each correct answer. The biggest flaw in this program is the limited appeal for older children, but the reading requirements make it impossible for preschoolers to use without adult assistance. Parents small children might be attracted to the free trial, but the lack of features makes this program pale in comparison to similar educational applications.
