"The best tool in making a personal Windows 2k/XP/2003 install CD."

by CableguyTK on June 11, 2006

    Pros: Its free!

It is an awesome graphical means to modifying a Windows install CD to your tastes. No need to run any command line operations or the sort.

Very easy to implement service packs or windows updates on the CD.

Very easy to add your own programs into the complete Windows install operation.

The best part of it all is that if configured properly, after you hit the enter key to start the format process on your hard drive you can leave your computer and come back to a clean Windows install. The program lets you configure the install to bypass such things as network configuration, windows time settings and Windows CDKey prompt (you still need the CDKey, which you implement into the CD installer).

You can predefinte everything from the CDKey to everything you would normally do in windows, like setup users, graphical options, services.msc options, etc.

The CD images it makes for burning are bootable...no having to fool around with UltraISO or Roxio Bootable CD creation wizard or whatnot. Just load the ISO into an ISO burner and you are good.

Oh, and you can also choose to load in unauthorized DLL's...most notably, a hacked UXTheme.dll into the XP install which allows for custom made Windows XP themes.

Cons: One major confusion which remains in the program is the services config. I could never fully understand whether the tab where it asks to REMOVE services actually REMOVED them from services.msc or if it just disabled them. I will never know since Im not brave enough to fool around with it. I know what services I need to disable in Windows, however I would never want to actually DELETE them, though.

There really aren't that many negatives. There is a LOT of stuff to fish through when going through the program, but that is because nLite strives to satisfy every person. Some people want this, others dont. Some people want that, others dont. They have a good team of developers in that respect. One thing that is worth noting is that this program won't overcome certain limitations of the CD setup itself. In the case of XP, for example, there is no way to actually SKIP the cdkey. You have to insert it into the unattended install setup, unlike Windows 2000, where there was a quick modification which could be made to skip the cdkey completely. I dont believe this will skip activation either.

Most of you will never need this software, but there are a lot of you who wish there was a way to install windows without installing such things as Windows Messenger, or having certain things enabled/disabled. If you are one of those people then this is THE program for you. Its free, the way software should be.
