iTunes

CNET Editors' review

by: CNET Staff on December 07, 2008

Although iTunes has always been one of the best pieces of jukebox software available, the company improved upon a great thing with version 7, which has added enhanced video capabilities, ringtone editing for the iPhone and new ways to view your music library.

A cleaned-up left sidebar makes finding your music and videos a snap and the new Album and Cover-Flow view options let you flip through CDs in style. The built-in video player accommodates both your own files and ones bought at the iTunes Store. Right-clicking a clip lets you render it iPod-compatible. With the addition of full-length movies at the iTunes Store, you can now view near-DVD quality movies at a resolution of 640x480.

The experience of both purchasing and playing movies and videos is almost identical to performing the same actions with music, so seasoned users will have no trouble. Old popular features remain intact including seamless iPod integration, smart playlists, CD burning, label printing, the ability to rip files in multiple formats (except WMA), network sharing, and, of course, the enormously successful iTunes Store. The iTunes Store also offers DRM-free, higher sound quality songs, but they're more expensive than the standard $0.99, as are ringtones. Movie rentals start at $2.99, and can be purchased for $9.99.

Rounding out the feature set are parental controls, integrated podcasts, and a smart-shuffle option. iTunes is sometimes clunky on Windows, and can cause significant processor slowdowns. Still, it remains a top-notch player and iTunes 7 should find a home on any media junkie's computer.

"The best music jukebox for Mac AND PC."

    July 8, 2008  |   By jp.adam

    Version: iTunes 7.6.1

    Pros

    Where do I start?

I discovered iTunes because of iPod like many of iTunes' users but I keep using it although I don't own one any more (saving for a Touch).

The interface is GREAT: intuitive, simple, elegant and minimalist.

Podcast are so simple. It's a pleasure to watch your episodes being downloaded and synced to your iPod without you even having to click a thing! And you can always discover more in the iTunes Store.

The Store is the number 1 in the US and has A LOT of songs/music clips/TV shows/Movies/Podcast/Audiobooks and more.

There are a couple of nice 'detail' functions like Coverflow and Radio.

It syncs amazingly with your iPod.

    Cons

Format support: I mean AAC is GREAT and MP3 support is also very welcome but more formats would be a more welcome upgrade. This goes for Video to.

The Store isn't available in all countries. ;(

DRM-Free downloads ('iTunes +') are very rare. If you own a non-iPod mp3 player you can't sync the itunes-purchased songs to it.

Non Apple devices can't be synced with iTunes.

iTunes is developed by Lucifer and it's malware."

    July 7, 2008  |   By Dano

    Version: iTunes 7.6.1

    Pros

Play's your purchased/video files or also plays your mp3s as well :)

    Cons

This program is written by the devil straightup...

I have tried almost every program produced by Audials and, none of them work.

Here's the thing, if you use iTunes for Purposes of listening to purchased

music/videos your fine...however, if your Purposes is to transfer a iTunes video file to

another computer to play convert/Burn to DVD you're pretty much screwed on this one...

iTunes makes it virtually impossible to do this. There is no program that can actually works

because iTunes Videos are beyond scrambled and, Itunes and QuickTime is the only programs

able to play it. Here is where malware comes in there is one program that *might* work... only one problem, the new versions

of Itunes will actually close "Replay Media Catcher" as soon as you launch iTunes so, there goes that idea...and it will attempt to crash most converters out there. You will not see any video output copy.

Thats correct, iTunes will shut down this program prior to lanchin it self. You will

also notice that, QuickTime and iTunes in addition to starting up 4 different processes...

It will also use alot of resorces. The CPU will indicate its going up to 90.

The point is, there is "noway!" to convert a iTunes Video file so, don't even think

    of wasting your time trying.

    Cons

Sometimes the program gets unstable and crashes but most of the time the program works good.
