Express Rip is a refreshingly functional and well-designed piece of software for extracting audio from compact discs and converting them to MP3 files.

The program’s interface is attractive and intuitive, with graphical buttons representing its major features. We inserted a CD, and the program immediately connected to the MusicBrainz database and grabbed the track names and other album information. Ripping the CD was as easy as choosing a destination folder and selecting from among 21 output formats. The program quickly ripped the tracks and saved them appropriately.

Express Rip doesn’t have a ton in the way of features; users can adjust the encoder settings if they want, and the program gives users a choice between MusicBrainz and FreeDB for album information. There are a few other basic items that can be customized, and that’s about it. But we don’t love Express Rip for its multitude of features; we love it because it’s easy to use and does what it’s supposed to do, which is a lot more than we can say for many similar programs.

It also has an online Help file that is well-written and thorough, another rarity. We think this program is a great choice for users who need a basic but well-designed CD ripper.

One of the additional perks is the simplicity of exporting in various formats such as WAV, WMA, and OGG, making it more versatile than similar basic rippers. While it doesn’t have features like batch processing or advanced editing options, it works seamlessly for users who just need to get the job done without hassle. Express Rip also integrates well with other software, such as audio editors, allowing for easy post-rip modifications.

Furthermore, the application is light on resources, meaning it doesn’t bog down your system even while processing CDs at high speeds.

When comparing Express Rip to another popular CD ripping tool like Exact Audio Copy (EAC), it becomes clear that each caters to different audiences. Does what it says, hijacks your .zip extractor

Pros
This is a very fast ripping tool, at least three times faster than iTunes or Windows Media Player. Lots of flexibility as to quality and format.
Cons
It changed the default app for .zip files to Express Zip which I would have had to download and install. It inexcusable for an application to alter system settings. As far as I am concerned, this makes it a piece of malware. Bad, bad, bad.

There's no such thing as a free lunch (unless it's open source).

Pros
Fast. Easy to set up preferred naming style for tracks and album. Uses two databases to get track names - very rare that they are not found.

Pros
My anti-virus and malware programs didn't detect any viruses or malware, as reported by others.
Cons
When I see that a program is free, I expect it to be free for as long as I wish to use it. I don't expect to see a nag screen after only a few CD's being ripped. I also don't expect the program to not work unless the requested information in the nag screen (namely a registration key) has been entered.

Does exactly what it is made for : ripping audio CD's to my NAS in an excellent sound quality .Very user friendly which I appreciate since we are not all computer specialists as some other producers of software apparently suppose.

Pros
Rips CDs just like WMP, only it uses a more up-to-date database for track names. I just got The Last Starfighter by Intrada which just came out. WMP can't find the tracks, but this program did with no problem. It also has several output extension and quality settings.

None that I could find.
