Although iTunes has always been one of the best pieces of jukebox software available, the company improved upon a great thing with version 7, which has added enhanced video capabilities, ringtone editing for the iPhone and new ways to view your music library.

A cleaned-up left sidebar makes finding your music and videos a snap and the new Album and Cover-Flow view options let you flip through CDs in style. The built-in video player accommodates both your own files and ones bought at the iTunes Store. Right-clicking a clip lets you render it iPod-compatible. With the addition of full-length movies at the iTunes Store, you can now view near-DVD quality movies at a resolution of 640x480.

The experience of both purchasing and playing movies and videos is almost identical to performing the same actions with music, so seasoned users will have no trouble. Old popular features remain intact including seamless iPod integration, smart playlists, CD burning, label printing, the ability to rip files in multiple formats (except WMA), network sharing, and, of course, the enormously successful iTunes Store.

The iTunes Store also offers DRM-free, higher sound quality songs, but they're more expensive than the standard $0.99. The aforementioned ringtone editor, set to go live the second or third week in September 2007, will also cost extra.

Rounding out the feature set are parental controls, integrated podcasts, and a smart-shuffle option. iTunes is sometimes clunky on Windows, and can cause significant processor slowdowns. Still, it remains a top-notch player and iTunes 7 should find a home on any media junkie's computer.

"What's with i-tunes?"

November 02, 2007  |  By vacaed

 |  Version: iTunes 7.4.3.1

Cons

I have had numerous Creative products. The Creative mediasource interface is by far more user friendly and customizable.

You cannot sync libraries or update music on twwo different computers without deleting your current library on the i-pod. I could automatically update files and folders using my creative products across multiple computers.

I nor my IT could not install the latest version on the Dell laptop I have at work.

Even after I change the location of my music in the software, it still can't see it.

The lack of a second pane to view files and folders for easy copying is ridiculous. Thankfully there are third party applications to overcome these shortcomings.

"Where Does Apple Get Off?"

November 02, 2007  |  By fmpdeveloper

 |  Version: iTunes 7.4.3.1

Pros

Nothing -- see below...

Cons

It seems that every time I open iTunes, it wants me to install the latest update. With each update, it packages all kinds of stuff I don't need or want, like iTunes helper, iPod Helper, QuickTime, and Apple Software Update. Moreover, they are all set to start up with my computer and run all the time, forcing me to manually disable each and every one these items using msconfig or some other utility.

However, the last straw came yesterday, when for some reason, I was unable to send out any e-mails through Outlook. After looking at account settings, firewall provisions, connections, etc., I decided to reboot the system and restart Outlook to see if that might help.

When Outlook started, it provided a helpful message stating that it had not been able to work properly due to the presence of the ITUNES SYNC ADDIN and would I like it disabled. I responded yes, and suddenly, my backlog of unsent e-mails all were able to go out.

My question is, WHERE DOES APPLE GET OFF INSTALLING AN ADDIN TO OUTLOOK WITHOUT NOTIFICATION OR PERMISSION? By installing this addin that breaks Outlook, Apple shows the same regard for its customers as Sony did with its rootkit installation.

Please do yourself a favor -- buy your music from Amazon. It works with the iPod, doesn't require invasive bloatware, and is DRM-free.

"I prefer the older version...with less extra baggage..."

October 18, 2007  |  By porsche911girl

 |  Version: iTunes 7.4.3.1

Pros

The new user interface is nice. That, and its ability to recognise and import SACD cds is nice. The rest I could do without.

Cons

Seeing as I don't have (or want) an iphone, nor do I watch DVDs or TV shows, or purchase anything from the itunes store, I have no need for half the stuff that's in this latest version. I also detest the fact that you *have* to download quicktime with it. They should make a 'lite' version of itunes for those of us who just want a basic itunes to listen to music and podcasts with.
