Although there have been several shareware choices to copy songs from your iPod to your computer, the freeware field has been empty--until iDump came along.

A clean, spreadsheet-style layout displays all music from the iPod attached to your computer, and is narrowed to a playlist through a drop-down menu or a specific song search. Songs can be organized by everything from song name or artist to bit rate, year, or even location on the iPod. iDump displays the song's iPod path, cracking Apple's unusual file-saving protocol. A main window tab takes you to output options, and from there you simply choose your songs and hit copy. Clicking once on a song selects it, and there's also a smart feature that plays the song you've selected in iTunes. The app also clocks in at under 1MB, so it's small enough to live on your iPod. We'll let you figure out why thats a good thing.

The only drawback to iDump is that it doesn't automatically import the songs into iTunes once they've been copied to your hard drive. Thats a small quibble, though, compared to the usefulness that this app offers up for free.

Publisher's description

From CodersHole :

This program will allow you to transfer your songs off your iPod to a PC. iDump does come wrapped in a installer but you can simply drop the .exe in the root directory on your iPod and run it from there. Connect you iPod and run iDump and you'll have access to all your songs, select the songs you want to transfer then pick a destination directory and how you would like your songs to be named. And then sit back and transfer all the selected songs to the PC.

"Portable and easy to use -- iPod version of "Putty""

by kongguan on August 22, 2005

Pros: As the publisher had said, the program *does* come wrapped in an installer. So just install it, copy the .exe to the iPod, and uninstall it, you get an independant iPod to PC music copier! Heard of the program "putty"? It's like that.

    - Ability to run straight from .exe --- which means you can run them on any PC easily without installation

    - The .exe is only 144kb! That's one heck of a portable software

    - 2 simple ways of browsing songs:

    . Search (pattern matching)

    . Playlists (including "All Songs")

    - Two steps to copy: Check and click. It's that easy

Cons: Since I am not looking for feature-rich softwares, I have no complains. If you're looking for crazy feature-rich stuff, this probably isn't for you.

    "Great Little Tool"

    by Snowman29 on July 12, 2005

Pros: Works great. Just download, pull it up in start/programs and then set the target path as your itunes music folder. Program will do it's thing quickly and then you just have to open itunes go to file/add folder and select your itunes music folder. Your songs will be in your itunes library and ready to play at that point. I only had 200 or so songs on my pod and it took less than 3 minutes for me to figure out. I'm no computer genius either.

Cons: It could be a bit more automated. I think for the technically challenged folks a more user friendly set up with simple automated button clicking would be better but it worked sweet for me.
