    "Great for the casual DJ"

    November 23, 2011  |   By ohappydey

    Version: djay 4.0.1

    Pros

Fun to use, very intuitive, integrates well with iTunes, nice and simple interface.

    Cons

Had a few problems with the update, but was able to get everything settled.

    Summary

I have a profound love of music, and I have a large collection of thousands of songs in multiple genres. I likes to DJ every once in a while, at a few parties here and there, and I have a lot of fun doing it. For someone like me who's somewhere in between a beginner and a pro, this app is perfect! The "automix" mode is an awesome feature. I can create playlists, cue up the next song, change the order, and set transitions just like that! What's even greater is I can control it all from my iPod Touch. This exactly what In need...nothing more nothing less.

    "Great program that works perfectly!"

    December 21, 2010  |   By RareWaves

    Version: djay 3.1.2

    Pros

Great features. Interface very intuitive. Low latency. If your music library is well organized (I have a well organized iTunes library), it's easy to grab songs from a playlist. The FX work well. The preference settings offer a lot of options.

    Cons

I had to practice on it a lot to finally feel comfortable with all the settings and features. I wish it had automated key matching. If someone gives you songs to play from a flash drive, they have to be added from the Finder instead of the library.

    Summary

I've used this program for over 2 years in both live and practice settings. I play a wide variety of music and have many file types and they all play nice together. I like that it plays iTunes m4p files (obviously it won't let you "record" protected files). The better you organize your iTunes library, the easier accessing music will be. One small inconvenience is if you want to play songs from an external drive or flash drive, unless you add them to your iTunes library, they wont show up in the djay library window. You'd have to open a Finder window and drag the file to the turntable. This could be a challenge as you can't see the meta-tags or filter and sort quite as easily as the library can. But it does work!

My original version was part of one of those nice Mac bundles, so it was basically free, then I paid about $25 for the version 3 upgrade, so the overall price has been worth it. I've used a few other DJ programs, but to be honest, I haven't used other programs enough to make a fair comparison. I just like this application a lot and have never had any crashes or freezes (although knowing the processor requirements, I imagine it runs better with a faster CPU and plenty of RAM). Mine is running on a current model Mac with up to date OS.

I also just noted algoriddim released djay for iPad in early December 2010. I haven't tried that yet, but will for sure consider that for live, mobile gigs. I highly recommend djay 3.1.2.

"Primitive interface doesn't make an easy-to-use program"

    July 4, 2010  |   By cpt-tobe

    Version: djay 3.1.1

    Pros

More DJ features in there than meet the eye. Allows you to use AU effects plugins. Integrated sampler. Low price (but you get what you pay for).

    Cons

User interface is cheesy and impractical. No waveform display, so you can't really cue up tracks before you launch them. EQ sounds muddy when you attenuate frequencies and harsh when you boost them.

    Summary

This program is mostly let down by its primitive interface. There are some good features hidden away but because you cannot access or monitor them through the main interface, they are pretty much useless. Controlling effects through the menu bar? Doesn't really work at all.

Overall this mostly feels like a gimmick program that tries to win you over with the cute "virtual turntables" on the screen. At $50 this is probably OK for some people but don't expect to really get a good mix together with this thing.

    "Almost Perfect!"

    January 31, 2008  |   By spidercookie

    Version: djay 2.0

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Great program. Perfect for Strip Club DJ's. Very stable (I use it for a minimum 8 hours a shift without any crashes).

    Wish List:
    1. Playlists organized into folders like iTunes does (and like SoundJam did back in OS 9).
    2. The ability to preview songs from the library or playlist without having to load the track onto a deck.
    3. More Audio FX.
    4. The ability to show and use multiple tool pallets instead of just 1 at a time.
    5. A "Party Shuffle" like playlist for Automix so I can choose songs from multiple playlists for Automix to play.
    6. Track time should display both elapsed time and time remaining concurrently.
    7. "Library View Options" should have all of the same view options available in iTunes. For example, some songs I only know by track number (instead of track name).
    8. Artwork doesn't show up on decks, but I think it's supposed to.
    9. Track times that I've changed in id3 tags in iTunes don't show up in djay. If I set a song to start playing 25 seconds into the track, it should also work in djay, but it doesn't.

    "Thank you!!!"

    February 23, 2007  |   By redanzl

    Version: djay 1.2

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
My friend is getting married this weekend, and she's on a real low budget - couldn't afford a DJ. She asked me to put together a bunch of songs to play for the reception, and I was just going to use iTunes and let it roll. I looked around for DJ programs, came across djay, and two nights before the event, I played around with it, and it's just what I needed!

I'm not a DJ, but this program is so easy to use that I'm confident that it's going to suit her needs seemlessly. I wasn't able to use some of the FairPlay-protected songs from iTMS, but I burned them to a disc, re-ripped them (without much noticable degradation), and I'm ready to go.

Karim, this is a great program, and you've helped some minimum-wage kids make a special night even better! Thank you very much!

    "Agree, it does look promising"

    June 20, 2006  |   By Will Fiveash

    Version: djay 1.0

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I have used djay a little and it is pretty sweet esp. for freeware. I've sent the developers some comments and they have been responsive and indicate an update is on the way. I'd say for simple DJ'ing jobs this is a nice application that should get better in the future. Good job.
