An effective and easy-to-use firewall program, ZoneAlarm does a great job of keeping your PC safe from a variety of threats. ZoneAlarm uses a simple wizard to make configuring a firewall, which seems like a daunting task to many computer users, incredibly easy. Maintaining and updating settings also is a snap when you're using the stylish interface and its simple slider controls. The program's Zones feature allows you to assign different security levels for a local network and for the Internet. The most notable addition to version 6.5.7 is small but quite helpful. A new "Game Mode" lets you automatically allow or deny alerts when you're in the middle of playing a video game. We found ZoneAlarm very good at recognizing and automatically including settings for our local network. In all our tests, the firewall guarded against all external and internal threats it encountered. ZoneAlarm is an excellent firewall choice for just about any average user. ZoneAlarm is designed to protect your DSL- or cable-connected PC from hackers. This program includes four interlocking security services: a firewall, an application control, an Internet lock, and Zones. The firewall controls the door to your computer and allows only traffic you understand and initiate. The application control allows you to decide which applications can and cannot use the Internet. The Internet lock blocks Internet traffic while your computer is unattended or while you're not using the Internet, and it can be activated automatically with your computer's screensaver or after a set period of inactivity. Zones monitor all activity on your computer and alert you when a new application attempts to access the Internet. Version 6.5.722 removes McAfee installation gate and fixes an update problem with LastWriteTime.

If for any reason you cant use the xp firewall, this free edition will take care of all the backdoor trojans, its a great little free product. works awesome. I have used it for years.

Zonealarm firewall is a great for protecting you for out and inbound access.
For starters, you can change the level of firewall protecting on you computer, great for suspicious websites.
Another is you have a choice for a program to allow to startup once or allowed to start or never startup. With the choice for the program to start up, you can allow it to go to the internet or never come out if you don't know if it works.
While that, it monitors all of the programs coming in and out the computer. With all this happening, you can shutoff/lock down the incoming and outcoming internet.
Cons
It may or may not happened to you, but sometimes the software freezes up and later starts to work properly.

Experts have told me I don't need Firewall on Dialup.My computer crashed last thursday.Fault wasn.t that of zone alarm.I removed wash+go because I didn't like it.It removed 2 files when I uninstalled and my computer died.I had to start all over again.What a bummer.I lost a lot of stuff.Since I installed zone alarm mid december everything has been 100%.Before the crash it had blocked 31,288 browser attemps.I couldn't believe it,and on dialup yet.What my computer would be like without it,I don't even want to think of it.I am glad I did not listen to anyone,and installed it.I am 100% satisfied and reccomend it to anyone.You won't be sorry,just very,very,very happy as I am.

Pros: It's about the easiest to use free firewall tool out there. However...
Cons: I stopped using ZoneAlarm a few years ago when I learned that it blocked ports needed by many P2P programs including Bittorrent, by default.
It's next to impossible to change that so it renders these programs useless.
A better choice would be Sunbelt Kerio Personal Firewall. It's much more configurable (although not as easy to use as ZoneAlarm).
ZoneAlarm has since added more nagging pop-ups that don't seem to be easily turned off (if you can at all). They appear every time you log into any user account in Windows.
One insists you watch s tutorial (and it still pops up after you've consented to watch the tutorial).
This program has gone downhill. As stated, I don't use it anymore, but friend (whose PC I help maintain) does.
It's clear that ZoneLabs wants you to upgrade to ZoneAlarm Pro. I'd rather upgrade Kerio than ZoneAlarm, thank you very much.
