Editors' review

ZoneAlarm has long been perhaps the most popular free firewall available, and millions have used it to block unwanted access to their computers. ZoneAlarm generally works well with antivirus software, too, but perhaps you'd be interested in a free antivirus solution that actually incorporates ZoneAlarm's firewall? That's CheckPoint's ZoneAlarm Free Antivirus Plus Firewall. ZoneAlarm Antivirus not only protects your system from unwanted intrusions, viruses, and other malware, but it also includes anti-phishing, site authentication, identity protection, and download management features. It's also available as a premium package. The free tool lacks the premium version's parental controls, virtual browsing, PC tune-up, and support features.

ZoneAlarm Antivirus's firewall component and Identity & Data Protection were active in the program's start window, though the main component, the antivirus protection, was disabled due to a conflict with our existing antivirus solution, which we'd left active to gauge ZoneAlarm's response. We disabled our existing tool, and ZoneAlarm automatically picked up the slack, showing our status for Real-Time Protection, Antivirus Scan, and Antivirus Update. The first thing to do when you're installing a new antivirus program is to update its definitions and make a baseline scan of your computer. We did that, choosing Full Scan with Archives, which we're glad to say found no bad stuff. You can schedule scans, of course, and ZoneAlarm's Settings let you customize scans, too, as well as launch targeted scans, set exceptions, view quarantined files, enable On Access scanning (which scans when you access files) and other options. One feature ZoneAlarm offers is Behavioral Scanning, which includes an extensive checklist of options the program can monitor for suspicious activity. The familiar ZoneAlarm Firewall includes Application Control, which blocks unauthorized access by programs. The Identity & Data tab includes two protection features, Web and Identity, plus 5 GB of online storage space.

ZoneAlarm Free Antivirus Plus Firewall has both online and offline Help options, basic support, and some extras like Top 10 Questions. We found it as easy to use as the standalone Firewall, and a lot easier than using ZoneAlarm's Firewall with another antivirus program. ZoneAlarm has stepped up as a significant player in free antivirus solutions.

    "Very dependable"

    May 06, 2014   |   By Thered101

    Version: ZoneAlarm Free Antivirus+Firewall 120.104

    Pros

You get a trusted brand name for free, simple to install.
It has other options the same as everything else you can download from CNET but the very easy thing to do is read everything first and don't tick any boxes....no brainer.

    Cons

    None whatsoever.

    Summary

Better by far than the majority of Antiviruses that you have to pay a lot of money for.

    "Great firewall, dangerous antivirus"

    March 25, 2014   |   By ElrondPA

    Version: ZoneAlarm Free Antivirus+Firewall 120.104

    Pros

I've used ZA firewall for years. It's an excellent two-way firewall (blocks unapproved outbound Internet connections as well as incoming connections). It runs very smoothly, integrating well with browsers and other Internet-connected apps.

    Cons

I decided it would be easier to have one application for both firewall and antivirus. Big mistake; twice ZA has announced that my computer is infected, and has proceeded to DELETE MY EMAIL INBOX (Thunderbird), because it found a virus attachment on a spam message. I can well believe that there was a malicious attachment; I get them all the time. But deleting my inbox is inexcusable. I have an online backup, but that still lost me today's messages. (It's also annoying that when this kind of virus is found, ZA takes over your entire computer, not letting you do anything else and automatically rebooting when finished.) I've now turned off ZA's AV and have switched to another AV vendor.

    "Deleted important icon"

    March 14, 2014   |   By Jake SD

    Version: ZoneAlarm Free Antivirus+Firewall 120.104

    Pros

I thought this would be good from the reviews but please read on for my experience...

    Cons

I'm really pissed that Zonealarm deleted the network connection icon from the notification area.
I use my laptop both online and offline and used the icon daily to check when connected.
When I installed Zonealarm, the icon was removed.
It is not just a matter of going to Network connections and checking the box, show network icon. It's already checked but the icon doesn't show.

    "Performance above the rest"

    November 13, 2013   |   By MarkM1_Erie

    Version: ZoneAlarm Free Antivirus+Firewall 120.104

    Pros

Provides firewall and antivirus protection in one place.

Free version that allows for standard level protection, suitable for many users.

    Cons

None, other than the slowness of availability of Windows 8.1 compatible release. But it's now available.

    Summary

Over the years I've used many of the AV and firewall applications available on the market. In the earl days, they all performed well, catching the virus infections almost always before they got on your computer. In the 90's I ran a small BBS and AV protection was paramount to ensure your users had the best experience possible.

With the advent of the Internet, it became necessary to add a firewall to the security application mix, as you now had a lot more avenues for attacks and infections to come from. As the attacks and potential infections have increased in number, frequency and complexity, the security applications have needed to evolve as well.

As they got more sophisticated, many of the old AV / firewall performers I trusted for a lot of years began to slow down my systems, often to the point of being basically unusable. When that happened, I looked for and moved on to another vendor's product.

Since coming to ZoneAlarm back in the Windows 2000 era, I've had very few issues with it. The only major one is also the most recent: the incompatibility issue when Windows 8.1 was introduced. For about a week, I was unable to have ZA installed on my system, and relied on the built-in Windows Defender for protection (along with the hardware firewall in my router). But when the Win8.1 compatible version was released, I immediately installed it, and have had no issues with it at all.

I'm the editor for our local computer User Group newsletter, as well as a technician that's been working on computers since before the PC existed. I've seen the need for increased security and protection for systems - from home users to corporate accounts - increase over the years as fast as the technology has. ZoneAlarm strives to keep up with these advances, and does so n timely manner, ensuring continuous protection.

As one that's worked with and reviewed many applications such as this, I have no reservations on recommending ZoneAlarm to others. I use the free version simply because it fills my needs. You may like the paid version and the expanded features it offers. But in either case, ZoneAlarm will be there protecting you in your online life.

"Beats allot of the big ones"

    November 12, 2013   |   By chilledfox

    Version: ZoneAlarm Free Antivirus+Firewall 120.104

    Pros

I've used this software for many years. As far as it goes on the trail basis the firewall does it's job, far and above. I'm going to be switching back shortly, from another. It Does what it say's on the tin.
Interface is user friendly. Easy to use! If you read the editors note! Does exactly what it say's on the tin. You can't go wrong.

    Cons

The problem is the customer scenario.
'I'm on facebook, got this and that running waaa'.
    Again it's the GIGO scenario.

    Summary

Don't complain! It does it's job and beats most of the other's hands down.

    "Taxes your system too much"

    November 12, 2013   |   By multi-timm

    Version: ZoneAlarm Free Antivirus+Firewall 120.104

    Pros

    Complete security.
    Good firewall and AV.

    Cons

    1. It brings a 2.6GHZ QUAD-CORE (yes, that's four processor cores) laptop to it's knees, when running a scan! It obviously doesn't take advantage of what multi-processors can do to allow for better multi-tasking.
    2. You cannot schedule the scans. Checkpoint makes the best corporate firewalls, which is their bread and butter. Taking away the user's ability to schedule scans in the free product does nothing to their bottom line, but sure makes this a think-twice-before-you-choose product.

    Summary

With the various Security suites our there, you don't have to accept that scans can't be scheduled by the user. Especially since the product doesn't take advantage of multi-threading and multiple processor cores, so as not to tax your system.
If you do any work at home, or any trading online, this could actually cost you a lot of money - when the scan starts at an inconvenient time.
I'm uninstalling it and looking elsewhere.

    "Not really free"

    November 03, 2013   |   By LizetteDM

    Version: ZoneAlarm Free Antivirus+Firewall 120.104

    Pros

? I did not install it

    Cons

It forces you to accept a tool bar and home page setting. It is not free as claimed. Free means no strings attached, They do not seem to understand the meaning of free

    Summary

Not free. A scam to get you to install their tool bar and home page on all of your browsers.
