An effective and easy-to-use firewall program, ZoneAlarm does a great job of keeping your PC safe from a variety of threats. ZoneAlarm uses a simple wizard to make configuring a firewall, which seems like a daunting task to many computer users, incredibly easy.

Maintaining and updating settings also is a snap when you're using the stylish interface and its simple slider controls. The program's Zones feature allows you to assign different security levels for a local network and for the Internet.

A great recent addition is small but quite helpful. A new "Game Mode" lets you automatically allow or deny alerts when you're in the middle of playing a video game. We found ZoneAlarm very good at recognizing and automatically including settings for our local network.

In all our tests, the firewall guarded against all external and internal threats it encountered. ZoneAlarm is an excellent firewall choice for just about any average user.

"It seemed to give fairly comprehensive control."

August 09, 2010  |  By Peter Lisheen

 |  Version: ZoneAlarm Firewall (Windows 2000/XP) 7.0.362

Pros

I'm not a judge of its technicalities, but liked the facility for controlling zones, and the alerts for suspicious activity from programmes on my computer.

Cons

I didn't always find it easy to understand, and it seemed to be less clever than it thought it was.

Summary

It has good basic design, and useful features, but I liked it less as time went by.

"Misstated application name"

February 01, 2010  |  By royholcomb

 |  Version: ZoneAlarm Firewall (Windows 2000/XP) 7.0.362

Pros

Don't know, can't run it.

Cons

Says it is for WIndows 2000 and Windows XP but when I try to install it on my 2000 build, an error message reports that my operating system is earlier than Windows XP.

Summary

Thats all fine but they really shouldn't say it works on Windows 2000.

"blocks internet after restart - have to uninstall"

March 27, 2009  |  By puffin00

 |  Version: ZoneAlarm Firewall (Windows 2000/XP) 7.0.362

Pros

after the problems I've had I don't see any - would have to uninstall and re-install every time I powered off

Cons

After shutting down and powering up I could not get the internet - looked at Zone Alarm - internet lock was off, settings were correct. I had Zone Alarm problems before. I uninstalled - got the internet. Reinstalled and next time same thing. Not fun

Summary

My computer runs Windows 200 which is a dinosaur but it suits my needs. I had a problem with Zone Alarm having the internet lock on every time I rebooted - but I could just turn it off. After the last download, when I powered up, no internet. I figured it was the same thing but the internet lock was off and all the settings were correct. Tried tweaking but nothing worked. After a couple of hours I uninstalled Zone Alarm - got to the internet immediately. My daughter who is a techie likes Zone Alarm so I re-installed. The next time I shut down and powered back up, the same thing happened. Uninstalled again - internet came back. Searched on the internet and found a lot of connection problems but none exactly like mine. I used to like Zone Alarm but I am now going to try another program. I don't have time to uninstall and reinstall every time I shut down the computer. The 'real' (commercial) program we have installed at work has been failing starting about two weeks ago. Several hard drives have had to be re-imaged because of virus problems and several more have taken 2 or 3 hours to fix. So it doesn't seem the 'professional' security suite is keeping up. Not worth paying money for nothing. I will try Comodo.

Updated on Mar 27, 2009

Forgot to mention that I did install an older version since the current one said it was not compatible with Windows 2000

"free. performs well. (slightly) resource hungry."

July 14, 2008  |  By jomar the great

 |  Version: ZoneAlarm Firewall (Windows 2000/XP) 7.0.362

Pros

COMPUTER: P4 2.8Ghz, 1GB ram, 256mb Video, windows XP

I've been using this for 6 years now.

1. buddies, this is free.

2. has free updates.

3. has less / very minimal ad that encourages you to upgrade it to PRO version. you can only see it if you would open the "ENTIRE" interface window of the zonealarm. otherwise, you WON'T see any bloody add. very decent, non-spammer unlike other firewalls that are showering with ads.

4. works well with other programs....

*AVG anti-virus

*AVG anti-spyware

*Spybot search and destroy

*AdAware

*spyware blaster

5. notifies you of other intrusions (inbound from the i-net)

6. has an auto-configure for well know legal apps. like IE, svchost, spooler, blah-blah...

7. displays each and every program that connects to the internet, whether be it in the safe/trusted zone or as a server.

8. the good thing here is that it shows the name and the LOGO of the application that would like to connect to the i-net.

there was one time that I saw 2 LOGO's of Internet explorer on the interface. I checked both of them. the legal one (that I always know) has its name displayed as IEXPLORE.exe -- afrom internet explorer itself.

the other one however, is named iexp.exe (small letters) and zonealarm diplayed it as an application trying to reach the i-net and that it is located on the TEMP folders(temporary) which should be HIGHLY unusual.

I managed to delete the bogus application using AVG anti spy.

so folks this would be of help to you.

Cons

1. the sad thing here is it doesn't make good friends with Avast anti-virus. I don't have any idea.

2. next is it should slow your computer a bit, particulary on the start-up.

in comparison to comodo and jetico, which I tried before (3 years ago) this one is much better. that comment about the blue screen of death (BSOD) has never happened to me. I don't how the bloody he got it. there should be some other problems with his computer.

at any rate, I haven't had any complain about this firewall.

so final word folks, TRY it.

it's worth the try. very much.

(many thanks to ZONELABS, ALWIL(avast), javacool, SND and GRISOFT(AVG) for giving out free, useful and very efficient programs to all of us.

"good and bad"

July 13, 2008  |  By atkh83

 |  Version: ZoneAlarm Firewall (Windows 2000/XP) 7.0.362

Pros

It helped a lots on blocking unwanted programs connect to internet, and I used to recommand to a lots of friends to use it

Cons

But last few days it blocked me from connecting to IE. I tried numbers of ways and finally I did reformat my computer as some other mentioned earlier. 1st time I still installed it, but problem remain - can't connect to internet, then I remove it and tried to connect IE. It works.

Not saying you can't use it. But if the similar problem occur, just uninstall it and switch to some other programs. It is still a good program. Hopefully someone can fix it, then I will come back for it.

"Trustworthy"

July 13, 2008  |  By sianpunkrockgirl

 |  Version: ZoneAlarm Firewall (Windows 2000/XP) 7.0.362

Pros

I love ZoneAlarm because it keeps me protected and up to date about what programmes are attempting to access my computer. It is simple to use as well. Whenever any programme, server, etc. attempts to access my computer a window pops up giving me the power to allow or deny access. I can allow permanently or just for the one time. Excellent protection!

"Still best Firewall for Windows"

July 12, 2008  |  By photolarry

 |  Version: ZoneAlarm Firewall (Windows 2000/XP) 7.0.362

Pros

Unless you are using Windows Vista, the built in firewall just is not sufficient. This is a great, and free, solution to blocking your pc from hackers on the internet.

"Works fine, but is it necessary?"

July 12, 2008  |  By TheHubster988

 |  Version: ZoneAlarm Firewall (Windows 2000/XP) 7.0.362

Pros

I've used ZoneAlarm (free) for a while, and have no major complaints. It tells you whenever ANYTHING tries to access the internet, which can be useful if, for example, java updater service is running and you didn't know it nor do you want it to be...

Cons

...but the constant alerts can get annoying. Also, I checked boot speed before and after installing ZoneAlarm on a newly-reformatted hard drive, and I'd say it added 3 to 5 seconds to total boot time, just the firewall alone.

Finally, I've found a website recently that I believe is highly reliable and has this to say:

'Myth - "The Windows XP Firewall is not good enough because it lacks outbound filtering."

Reality - ..."Any outbound host-based firewall filtering in Windows XP is really just meaningless as a security feature in my opinion. True, it stops some malware, today, but only because current malware has not been written to circumvent it. There simply are not enough environments that implement outbound rules for the mass market malware authors to need to worry about it. In an interactive attack the attacker can circumvent outbound filters at will..." '

-home.comcast.net/~SupportCD/XPMyths.html (scroll down to/search for: XP Firewall)

If you care enough to delve deeper into the sources, the aforementioned opinion on outbound filtering comes from Dr. Jesper Johansson, who "is currently a principal software security architect, managing programs and projects related to application security, secure software development practices, and security training. Prior to his current role Dr. Johansson worked on security at Microsoft..." etc.

-mvp.support.microsoft.com/profile/Jesper

I'm thoroughly convinced and am ditching everything but the Windows Firewall...which improves boot time, "protects at system boot", is obviously free, and apparently as good as all this other crap...at least until my secure data becomes compromised, and I learn my lesson the hard way. If that happens, I'll find comfort in knowing that I have an uber-experienced security guy with a Ph.D. to blame for it, right? He seems legit, and has a pretty good sense of humor too..so I respect him.
