HijackThis remains a highly recommended tool to keep your system secure from persistent spyware. This lightweight program meticulously examines vulnerable areas of your system, including browser helper objects and specific Registry keys.

By clicking the Scan button, HijackThis generates a log with dozens of entries, many of which are simply customizations that aren’t malicious. However, it’s important not to select an item and click Fix Checked unless you're confident it’s malware. If unsure, the Info on Selected Item option provides context for why an entry is flagged but doesn't definitively confirm whether it is malware. To verify, you can search the web for the item's name or visit forums like SpywareInfo or Computer Cops, where experienced users can assist in identifying the threat. Saving the log creates a text document you can easily share on these forums for help.

The most recent version of HijackThis introduces enhanced capabilities in the Config window, making it even more powerful for tackling complex spyware issues. Adding a process manager and host file editor greatly improves your ability to remove harmful infections from your system. An important tool, ADS Spy, scans for alternate data streams—a method some browser hijackers use to hide from typical spyware removal programs. These updates make HijackThis a more effective tool for managing threats.

However, a few issues still need attention. The program continues to install in the directory where the file is unzipped, which may make it difficult to locate, especially if you're unfamiliar with file management. Despite these minor annoyances, HijackThis remains essential for dealing with serious infestations. It’s crucial, though, to approach this tool with caution, as incorrect use can lead to unintended system changes.

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware offers a more user-friendly experience than other spyware detection tools. While HijackThis is highly effective for advanced users, Malwarebytes simplifies the process by automatically detecting and removing a broader range of threats without requiring manual log analysis. Malwarebytes provides a step-by-step guide for malware removal, whereas HijackThis demands more expertise. Additionally, Malwarebytes offers real-time protection against malware, something HijackThis lacks. However, HijackThis shines with its specific, targeted approach to removing stubborn infections that may evade more generic tools.

Bottom Line

The recent updates for HijackThis have made it more capable, but Malwarebytes may be a better fit for casual users looking for a simpler and more comprehensive security solution. Both apps have strengths, but the choice depends on the user’s needs and technical expertise.

Developer’s Description

Scan your Registry and hard drive for spyware.

HijackThis lists the contents of key areas of the Registry and hard drive--areas that are used by both legitimate programmers and hijackers. The program is continually updated to detect and remove new hijacks. It does not target specific programs and URLs, only the methods used by hijackers to force you onto their sites.

As a result, false positives are imminent, and unless you're sure about what you're doing, you always should consult with knowledgeable folks before deleting anything.
