This freeware ZIP-file extractor doesn't have much to offer most users, but you'll need it to open archives encrypted with PKWare products such as PKZIP or SecureZIP. ZIP Reader's interface couldn't be more laconic; you simply select which file to extract and where. You can also access the program by right-clicking an archive in Windows Explorer. ZIP Reader supports popular archive formats besides ZIP, including RAR, TAR, and GZIP. In our tests, however, it scrambled the names of files written in Cyrillic letters. If you need ZIP Reader, you probably already know it, and don't need convincing. But if you don't use PKWare software, you're probably better off with another, more full-featured utility.Publisher's Description

Handy, easy to use utility for those times when you absolutely, positively, gotta unlock something RIGHT NOW, without the bulk and complexity of a WinZip or WinRAR. Quick, hassle-free download & install, no uninstall issues, small footprint and FREE

It's hard to detect any negatives, but this is a seldom-used tool, and I pre-emptively took away one star in anticipation of future discovery.
Summary
MY bottom line was immediate need to unlock shared server files at work from a business partner who didn't anticipate the problems that would ensue for those among us who are accustomed to simply downloading and opening files (even mega-sized ones). This particular archive was a final set of building plans for a large-scale airport renovation project, and time was critical. I was prepared to download and try several different programs before I finally hit on one that would do the trick without requiring a tech manual or a steep learning curve. Much to my surprise and delight, the appropriately (if unimaginatively) named "Zip Reader" jumped at the opportunity to unlock my archive, and did so with alacrity. Anyone who needs a quick-fix, easy to use utility for those occasions when you lack the requisite extraction tool would be daft not to give Zip Reader a try.
