Eat your heart out, Windows Explorer. This powerhouse file manager beats the pants off Microsoft's built-in utility on almost every count. Start with the interface: Xplorer2 lets you browse two or more folders in one window using panes (as in Total Commander or FAR) and tabs.
You can save several window layouts and quickly switch among them when necessary. Visual filters let you more easily navigate overcrowded directories. Selecting several files is a breeze, since you don't have to hold down the Ctrl key. Xplorer2's tweaks aren't limited to the interface, either. You can rename multiple files at once, split and merge files, synchronize folders, and shred data to prevent recovery.
The program supports NTFS hard links (which are more powerful than shortcuts, allowing you, for instance, to move the source file without breaking a link). An enhanced DOS command line lets you create scripts for processing file batches. All in all, there's a good chance you won't go back to Windows Explorer once you get a look at Xplorer2.

"Registration Problem with Trial Renders Lite Version Unusable"
Pros: I liked Lite (freeware) version of the software, so I decided to try the Full version to see if the additional features made it worth purchasing.
Cons: Although I had never installed the Full version of the software, after installation I received a message that my trial period had expired and that if I wanted to use the software, I would have to purchase a license, and the software closed.
I was disappointed that I wouldn't be able to try the Full version, so I uninstalled it and reinstalled the Lite version. However, when I went to start it up, I received the same licensing message I got when installing the Full version -- installing the Full version had apparently rendered the Lite version unusable.
I contacted technical support, and was given a work around that didn't work. I re-contacted tech support letting them know that the Lite version was still failing, but, as of yet, have not heard back from them.
If you've been using the Lite version and want to continue to be able to use it, I would advise against installing the Full version (unless, of course, you know you're willing to pay for a license). Otherwise, you could end up with no version working.

Version: Xplorer2 1.7.0.4
Pros: It makes file management a dream. It does all the things 9and man, many more besides) that I could do in File manager in windows 3.11 and which have been unavailable from win 95 onwards.
Cons: It takes a long time to open if the focus when you re-open is on a network drive you were using in your last session and which isn't now avai;able. This tends to be a problem when I've been using a vpn connection to work that's not avaible when i login next.

"Easy as you want, as down and dirty as it needs to be."
Pros: Does the basic Windows Explorer tasks intuitively; lets one do the hard stuff within a Windows mode that otherwise would need the DOS box and extensive knowledge of good old DOS 5.0.
Cons: A bit difficult to learn all the tricks; but then, perhaps this is just part of the fun.

"Full-featured, rock-solid dual-pane file manager"
Pros: I've tried many dual-pane file managers, and like xplorer2 the best. I've been using it for years. It is quick and reliable. The free version has all the functionality I need, and the pro version has lots more cool bells and whistles. See my detailed review in my weekly blog on great utilities and Web sites, "Jonathan's Tool Bar & Grill" (#5, 10/25/06) on Blogger.
Cons: Only problem: So many features and functions and keyboard shortcuts, that it's impossible to remember them all.

"Essential file management software"
Pros: Remember the much-loved old XTree Pro from the DOS days? Well Xplorer2 will be what you have been looking for. Extremely stable, easily customisable and well supported, Xplorer2 has the essential file management features required by todays large disk drives. I have been running it with WinXP Pro SP2 for years and never had an issue.
Cons: Nothing.
