Xnews

Publisher's Description

From Clarion:

Xnews is fashioned after NewsXpress, a program no longer in development. Xnews features a quick filter, a score file for more advanced filtering, support for multiple servers and identities, binaries handling, optional header and article caching, and folders for permanent archival.

Version 5.0 adds a free-floating editor window, support for the yEnc binary encoding scheme, and many other enhancements and bug fixes.

"Unwieldy UI and very slow decoding / binary retrieval."

    September 29, 2011  |   By thomas.tmc

    Version: Xnews 5.04.25

    Pros

    Lightweight
    Free

    Cons

Could only download at ~1/3 of my connection speed. Tried my regular reader, 100%, Xnews, almost 30%, consistently.

Multiple clicks or menus must be accessed to accomplish simple tasks that should be a single or double click.

    Summary

Probably a great reader for simple Text, but not in the least for binaries.

Far more effort than should be required to queue multiple files for download, only to have them download at a very slow pace.

    "Best newsreader"

    July 27, 2011  |   By alsandor

    Version: Xnews 5.04.25

    Pros

Handles filters admirably and performs with nary a hiccup. Old DOS screen a plus in my mind...

    Cons

Can`t think of any. Some might have trouble with it if they are not used to setting up programs as it requires input from the user.

    Summary

I tried (and paid for) some other newsreaders and found they all had some issues that Xnews cuts through. It is no longer maintained by the developer but is still the best reader around.

    "Thank You Mr. Tran"

    January 1, 2011  |   By dalemj12003

    Version: Xnews 5.08

    Pros

Very easy to use. Doesn't clutter up your hard drive with unnecessary headers. Better that Agent by a long shot.

    Cons

Still jams up (Xnews not responding) when trying to multitask.

    Summary

I have used Xnews for seven years and have yet to find a competitor that is as easy to use at any price. Thank you again for the freeware release of this fine product.

    Summary

I prefer either Grabit or News Grabber 3, a 2002 proggie.

"To c|net: This is NOT version 5.08"

    July 28, 2010  |   By tgi007

    Version: Xnews 5.08

    Pros

1234567890 (c|net requires at least 10 characters in this field, so here they are.)

    Cons

1234567890 (c|net requires at least 10 characters in this field, so here they are.)

    Summary

This is 5.04.25 which was released 04/25/2002

I'm actually kinda curious how it took c|net until 2009 to review this. Is the backlog actually 7 years deep?

    "Not very pleased...."

    May 28, 2010  |   By badbadbad911

    Version: Xnews 5.08

    Pros

    easy/basic GUI

    Cons

I just want to read my RSS feeds and this program is just, well, poor at doing that. Others have some good things to say, but not my cup of tea at all.., I couldn't even figure out how to input the URL of my RSS feeds! FAIL

    Summary

Free - which is always nice - but not worth giving it a shot in my opinion, when you have FeedDemon, GoogleReader, etc...

"Would be a great program but author is socialist tyrant"

    March 21, 2010  |   By Sarah-PM

    Version: Xnews 5.08

    Pros

    Excellent program overall

    Cons

The author asserts his marxist style control issues over the program in the form of "netiquette" and wont allow the program to do anything that HE doesnt deem correct.

    Summary

If the author would JUST write good software and stay out of controlling other peoples' lives with it, I'd give it 5 stars.

    "Has always worked flawlessly"

    December 15, 2009  |   By dwmyers99

    Version: Xnews 5.08

    Pros

Does what it is supposed to do every time.

    Cons

Perhaps a little difficult to learn.

    Summary

If you take the time to learn the somewhat confusing interface, this program works flawlessly. I have been using it for years on Windows 98, XP, Vista, and 7. It has never caused a lockup or failed in any way. The interface is not particularly user friendly, but has all the functionality I need for both upload and download.

    "Not an upgrade as advertised"

    August 21, 2009  |   By jspack

    Version: Xnews 5.08

    Pros

This is not an update. It is the same version that has been around for several years.

    Cons

    Ni new features

    Summary

Not worth the time downloading unless you don't already have it then it is worth it as it is a good program.
