"Good"

January 10, 2008  |  By ognen93

 |  Version: Xfire 1.31

Pros

Xfire is a great software that alows you to chat with your friends online, while ingame. Whether you're staying on the internet or playing a game it pops up and allows you to speak with friends. It's design is really flexible and modern.

Another cool feature of the software is that it keeps track of how much hours have you played a separete game, and how much time have you played games overall.

Also, on the official site (xfire.com) you can participate in thousands of contests, most of them based on chatting with famous people, and you can also join clans to discuss your same interests.

Cons

The bad side of Xfire is that it may sometimes log you off without particular reason and it can make you errors in some games. I game it made problems to me was Oblivion.

Another bad thing is that sometimes the text color changes in the chat window and you can't see what you write.

"Good, but not that good!"

April 08, 2007  |  By 3xDreamRealm

 |  Version: Xfire 1.31

Pros

Just like any messenger, but with features for use with gaming and cut-downs of few things other messengers have. It's resource friendly and you can chat whilst in the game (by pressing an assigned chat shortcut-key) without pressing ALT & TAB to minimize and chat. Good list of supported games, fairly good stat-tracking (in user profile) and tracking of your server-location for friends to join you through Xfire.

Cons

1] Does not support the change of fonts or sizes seperately rather than going through options.

2] Doesn't tell you what it's downloading on your computer for automatic updates, such as an antivirus or other programs that tell you what's being downloaded and updated.

3] No option to disable automatic downloads, at least that can help with system performance in other programs when a game isn't running (dunno if auto-download runs whilst playing games).

4] The chat log doesn't point to you where that actual chat file is located so you can save a backup copy of it, only someone who knows how to track-down the folder where such a file exists can get them copied for backup (not worth the time or trouble for those who don't want to go that deep).

5] No option to disable auto-detecting of games or even provide with a checkbox for the games you play on your computer that it shouldn't auto-detect but leave as default games.

6] Stat-tracking isn't specific enough to track kills, deaths, arrests, objectives, total score. It only tracks the number of kills, so if you got high score without killing, you will be at the bottom of the list.

7] Does not support blocking of currently added friends if you want to temporarily block them. You have to remove them.

8] It doesn't have an "uninstall" program to remove Xfire from your computer, you have to go through Windows "add or remove" process.

"If you're a gamer & like to instant message... this is for you"

February 28, 2007  |  By Vampiric5

 |  Version: Xfire 1.31

Pros

- Send and Recieve messages WHILE you play games. Hundreds of games are supported.

- Teamspeak quality voice chat.

- Xfire is simple and refined, using very little resources and memory. It is non-instrusive, doesn't start up without you telling it to, doesn't choke your system with pop-up advertisements and spam all over the place.

- Tells you what games your buddy is currently playing and/or what server they're on. Also track your favorite servers with Xfire.

- File transfers blazing fast. Transferring files on Xfire is easy, and better than both AIM and MSN combined. Getting patches, demos, trailers, is awesomely easy.

- Tracks how many hours you play on your profile.

- New features are added frequently.

- Ultimately a good messenger service is you play a lot of games and want to keep in touch with friends while you play... and like your IM experience simple and non-intrusive.

Cons

- Don't expect many high-end chat features.

- It's not as widely used as many would like.

- Overall lack of high-end features. Small memory requirements means display pictures, "smilies", blogging, music-playing and other typical MSNish stuff is cut out. Some, like myself, might not see this as a con though.

- Some (but not all!) older games don't support Xfire's in-game messaging, which somewhat defeats the entire purpose of using Xfire.

- Xfire lacks polish in some areas. Skins are kinda bland, mostly to keep system requirements low.

"Very Innovative, or so it seems"

October 17, 2006  |  By botosai12

 |  Version: Xfire 1.31

Pros

Excellent Feature for gamers. While your playing a game a pop up at the bottom says, someone had sent you a message and you press scroll lock plus something and you respond without leaving the game. When you log on you know what your friends are playing, or if there just online. Very good, but has major flaws

Cons

I was playing WoW with Xfire, it caused my keys to freeze, i would run past the enemy, turn around 5 times, not press a spell, it was horrible. Then afterplaying, i saw the blue screen of death for pc's. WINDOWS HAS ENCOUNTERED SERIOUS ERROR. After it recovered the next day it said it was due to new software i downloaded, xfire, so i said screw this, uninstalled it, and now WoW works great, computer may be damaged though. Innovative, but causes a serious Windows Error, at least on mine.
