Editors' review

XYplorer is a versatile file management program that gives users plenty of options for organizing and maintaining their files. With both basic and more advanced features, this program is a good choice for users at all levels.

The program's interface is fairly attractive and intuitive. Frequently used functions are represented by nice graphical buttons, and other features are organized in drop-down menus. We liked that the interface is so customizable, with plenty of options for viewing and working with files. Users can view files as lists with or without details, or as icons or thumbnails. The dual-pane view allows users to work in two different areas of their machines at once, easily moving files between them, and an optional info panel provides detailed information about each file. As for features, XYplorer has plenty. Some are quite simple: users can search files, color-code file names and add comments, and create lists of favorite files and folders. More experienced (or adventurous) users will enjoy being able to automate tasks using the program's scripting feature, and we especially appreciated the crash course in scripting that the built-in Help file provides. The program seems to have been designed with the needs of both novice and advanced users in mind, and it balances these two ends of the spectrum well.

XYplorer has a 30-day trial period. It comes as a zip file, but installs and uninstalls without issues. We recommend this program to all users seeking an intuitive and multifeatured way to manage their files.

"This is the worst software I have ever used"

    July 05, 2014   |   By DLD-UK

    Version: XYplorer 14.20

    Pros

    I can't think of any.

    Cons

It is really hard to find a file manager that make MS Explorer look good but this achieves it. The interface is a mess. I have tried repeatedly to get a simple drives view on the left, folders view in the middle and file preview on the right. I failed. I read the manual which contains virtually no screenshots. I contacted the develop who refused to answer such a basic question.

When you enter dual pane mode you expect the second pane to show a complete duplicate of the first pane. It doesn't. There is only one drive/folder pane on the left for both of the other panes. This makes using the software a complete nightmare as you are constantly i

    Summary

I can find nothing to recommend this software and contacting the developer just resulted in abuse. Apparently the only support available to customer is to use a forum. I do not want to use yet another forum in order to get the software to do basic file management tasks. I thought reading the manual would help. It didn't.

For anyone looking for complex tasks like batch renaming I strongly recommend Bulk Rename Utility. Not only is it free but it accomplishes the renaming with such power and ease, something XYplorer failed to do. It takes a few minutes to learn but it is well worth it. When I got XYplorer to eventually batch rename some files it merely made me appreciate just how good Bulk Rename Utility is. XYplorer was way more complicated, much less friendly and failed to do what I wanted 99% of the time. Bulk Rename Utility worked each time with ease.

For audio file management I recommend Mp3tag. Again, this is free but is wonderfully powerful and easy to use.

With both Bulk Rename Utility and Mp3tag I have never once had to read a manual. They just work and are easy to understand. With both you can easily see the effect of any changes you make and also undo them with ease.

I cannot recommend anything about XYplorer and I found the developer hostile. Rather than answer basic questions he merely insulted me. I personally do not want to support developers like that. In my view, a developer should realize that a customer forced to ask basic questions is merely highlighting issues that need to be addressed in both the product and the manual. Such comments should be welcomed. Instead, my first question was ignored, I was then rudely referred to the forum and then told that my behavior was bizarre because I felt the software should be easier to use and that the manual should address the issues I was raising. To me, it is as basic as a photo management program that will only display the top 1/4" of any photo and the developer referring you to a forum instead of dealing with the issue. I should make it clear that I have a fully paid professional license, so I am not talking about the free version. Being referred to forum for a free product is completely acceptable.

If you want a very powerful way of manipulating files then I would suggest learning Perl. It is a great scripting language with the power to do any file manipulation you may want. There is a learning curve but once learned you are not hindered by badly designed interfaces. And again it is free, works on Linux too and is well supported by very well written books.

If you like reading loads of syntax with almost no screenshots then you might like the XYplorer manual. Personally I found it 700 pages of totally useless information and a total waste of time. Even having read it, I could not get XYplorer to display my drives, folders and files in the way I wanted them displayed. And surely that is the most basic thing you can expect from a file manager.

Don't waste your time. Even the cmd prompt is easier!!!!

My review got truncated. It should have said

"This makes using the software a complete nightmare as you are constantly in the wrong place in the drive/folder hierarchy for the tab you are in"
