XYplorer is a versatile file management program that gives users plenty of options for organizing and maintaining their files. With both basic and more advanced features, this program is a good choice for users at all levels.

The program's interface is fairly attractive and intuitive. Frequently used functions are represented by nice graphical buttons, and other features are organized in drop-down menus. We liked that the interface is so customizable, with plenty of options for viewing and working with files. Users can view files as lists with or without details, or as icons or thumbnails. The dual-pane view allows users to work in two different areas of their machines at once, easily moving files between them, and an optional info panel provides detailed information about each file. As for features, XYplorer has plenty. Some are quite simple: users can search files, color-code file names and add comments, and create lists of favorite files and folders. More experienced (or adventurous) users will enjoy being able to automate tasks using the program's scripting feature, and we especially appreciated the crash course in scripting that the built-in Help file provides. The program seems to have been designed with the needs of both novice and advanced users in mind, and it balances these two ends of the spectrum well.

XYplorer has a 30-day trial period. It comes as a zip file, but installs and uninstalls without issues. We recommend this program to all users seeking an intuitive and multifeatured way to manage their files.

"A replacement for the mess MSFT made of Explorer in W7"

July 26, 2010  |  By sam99999999

 |  Version: XYplorer 9.40

Pros

Don't like the changes Microsoft made to Windows Explorer in Windows 7? Miss the way Explorer worked in XP? This product will allow you to be productive again. You can set up the interface to look just like XP with better search and more features.

Cons

Doesn't (yet) support "single click" for opening files in the right-hand pane (though it does support single click in the left-hand folder pane).

Summary

The author is *extremely* responsive and end user-focused. He answers email promptly and often responds with changes and requested features in just hours.

The fact that the product doesn't require installation and makes no registry changes (i.e., it can run portably from a download, USB stick, or CD) is what got me to try it.

The license terms are very generous: pay once and get unlimited upgrades and use it on unlimited machines. I ended up purchasing after the second day of the trial.

You can try both the home version and the Pro version by toggling an option in the configuration settings (to decide which version to purchase).

The changes Microsoft made to Explorer in W7 may be OK for typical end users, but not for power users. The fact that it doesn't even traverse junction points and "hides" the real path to things drove me crazy. XYplorer changes all that. I'm back to being happy with W7 thanks to this product.

"Fast utility with no known (to me) downsides"

July 16, 2010  |  By nsl333

 |  Version: XYplorer 9.40

Pros

It's fast, light weight, and adds tons of functionality to your File Manager. It took me less than 30 minutes to move from the trial version to a lifetime license.

Cons

None at all

Summary

The ability to add scripts (macro's) to your file manager is absolutely brilliant! I review a lot of files (docs) in 100's of corresponding directories. Now I can mark the files with colors (tags) for 'In-Progess', 'Done', 'Interesting'. And the directories as 'Done' or 'In Progress' or 'Interesting files within'. For that I use little macros that choose a different icon out of shell32.dll (folder-with-checkmark, search-icon and star resp.). All with just one mouseclick! It really saves me tons of time.

The color tags can be lost when they are copied outside of your own system. This is due to my OS limitations (XP64). The directory ratings WILL be kept even as you backup to a USB-disc and reload in a system with just a normal Explorer.

And the directories as 'Done' or 'In Progress' or 'Interesting files within'. For that I use little macros that choose a different icon out of shell32.dll (folder-with-checkmark, search-icon and star resp.). Previously I couldn't do any file-tagging other than moving files to subdirectories. But that screws up your backups. I did directory tagging before (rightclick/properties/tab-customize-buttonChangeIcon/browse to the new icon...).Now its one mouse-click

The color tags can be lost when they are copied outside of your own system. This is due to my OS limitations (XP64). The directory ratings WILL be kept even as you backup to a USB-disc and reload in a system with just a win Explorer.
