Once you get the command(s) right XXCOPY is a great tool.
Difficult to master all them switches! The doc needs better / more examples of how to code the commands.
Worth the effort to wade through all the command requirements to get what you want. I've used if for over two years now, very pleased with it's capabilities.
Great copy utility when it works
Has a Windows version check that renders it useless in batch files whenever a Windows Service Pack is released
XXCopy is once again broken for use in batch files, this time by the Windows 7 SP1 update. Whenever Windows issues a service pack update, and sometimes for routine non-service pack updates, XXCopy starts issuing this prompt:
Caution!!! This version of XXCOPY has never been tested
in the current Operating System environment.
You should acquire the latest version of XXCOPY
from the XXCOPY web site (http://www.xxcopy.com).
Run this program at your own risk.
Press any key except <ESC> within 2 minutes to continue.
Otherwise, the program will terminate automatically.
which of course breaks it for use in batch files, because you won't always be hanging around to hit a key when it stalls like this. It's an annoying, chronic problem that the authors just won't fix. Instead, they issue a workaround patch that breaks the next time Windows issues an update. Too bad. It has the potential to be a great program.
Compresses directory hierarchies
Not the best repository backup or synchronization tool - more granular than that.
Basically I needed to manipulate and move files and used other tools to check for duplicates. XXCOPY worked great in this capacity.
I liked how the program will continue when it can't copy a file. It won't stop like if i were pasting and copying through GUI. I also think its better than xcopy.
I don't like how it doesn't really provide much information about the files that were not copied. It would be helpful if it did.
I recommend it to technicians who need to copy data overnight so that it doesn't stop at the first error.
Annoying installation, no GUI,
Installaion forces user to wait for licence text to display letter by letter, installation path has to be typed manually, installation program is unable to create directories. - I didn't complete the installation since I was scared the software itself might have a quality similar to the installation routine.
