Editors' reviewThis utility recovers lost passwords of Word documents and templates, but its frustrating trial download only reports that it has found a password and does not reveal what it is. Word Key, with its singular window, is simple to use. The window explains how to check a single file, but there are methods for checking folders or drives. The results are quickly displayed, even if they just serve to tease in the trial. Though the manufacturer recommends visiting its site for an updated version, this version will search for File-Modify, document, and File-Option passwords. Several parameters, including the number of characters and checking for lowercase or uppercase letters, digits, symbols, or spaces, can be readily changed. Unless you just want to know if a file is password-protected, we cannot recommend Word Key.
Word Password Recovery Key finds passwords for MS Word (DOC) files. Whenever an important document becomes inaccessible or uneditable because of a lost password, Word Key saves your time and data. It works with all versions of MS Word and provides recovery for all types of passwords, including instant recovery of form- and document-protection passwords. All Word 95/7.0, 6.0, and 2.0 passwords are instantly recovered. Word 2003, 2002, 2000, and 97 file-open passwords are recovered using a combination of brute-force, Xieve, and dictionary attacks. Word Password Recovery Key has support for multilingual passwords, automatically saves the password search state, and can resume after a stop or a crash. It also has online help and full install and uninstall support.
