From Wireshark:
Wireshark is a network protocol analyzer, and is the standard in many industries. It is the continuation of a project that started in 1998. Hundreds of developers around the world have contributed to it, and it is still under active development. Read or write many different capture file formats: tcpdump (libpcap), Catapult DCT2000, Cisco Secure IDS iplog, Microsoft Network Monitor, NAI Sniffer (compressed and uncompressed), Sniffer Pro, and NetXray, Network Instruments Observer, Novell LANalyzer, RADCOM WAN or LAN Analyzer, Shomiti or Finisar Surveyor, Tektronix K12xx, Visual Networks Visual UpTime, and WildPackets EtherPeek,TokenPeek, or AiroPeek.
What's new in this version: Version 1.8.2 has fixed Wireshark crashes when using multiple files and crashes in interface list and pipe handling.

"Great tool for network monitoring"
Version: Wireshark 1.6.4
Pros
-Monitors all network traffic on a network.
-Very advanced/complex software, has lots of tools and filter options.
-FREE!Cons
none that i can think of
Summary
Great tool for both monitoring your network and just for educational purposes to see what different kinds of network traffic looks like. (for example port scans and ping sweeps).
Can easily see what everyone is doing on your network.
Also a great tool if you think you have some kind of backdoor trojan on your computer, you can see any odd traffic and even see where you the backdoor is sending/receiving data from. -
"Great Packet Sniffer"
Version: Wireshark 1.6.4
Pros
Fairly easy to install and captures quite well.
Cons
The program has numerous options and enabling or disabling the options requires an in-depth knowledge of this program.
Summary
This is a great program if you have a need to capture data for analysis. The program performs very well and is essentially transparent.
-
"Great Application!"
Version: Wireshark 1.4.4
Pros
Wireshark has the ability to analyze packets at a low level as well as a wide selection of filtering criteria which make finding a particular packet in a flood of others.
Cons
It is a complicated interface, however, if the user understands the information being parsed it is not too difficult to wade through it.
-
"It is a good packet sniffer"
Version: Wireshark 1.4.1
Pros
The ability to monitor network traffic flow and see if there is not any traffic
Cons
Too much data so the need to learn how to filter out what traffic to look for
Summary
The program is good because it gives someone the information about uploads and downloads
-
"Very good and simple to use"
Version: Wireshark 1.2.10
Pros
Very simple to use and works very well. I use it primarily for trouble shooting network operation and congestion. Works great for monitoring wireless traffic on our network to see any problem areas or who is using up the bandwidth in real time.
Cons
Have not used many of its features as of yet to find any bad areas.
-
"A great product!"
Version: Wireshark 1.2.9
Pros
Great product. I use it to test individual connections within my business network. Labels source and destination IP's, port connections, etc... This is a must for network IT's.
Cons
When printing, it doesn't format it neatly. descriptions can be a little confusing.
Summary
Great product. Will continue to use.
-
"An industry-standard tool"
Version: Wireshark 1.2.7
Pros
While Wireshark has an intuitive, easy-to-read log interface, it also has plenty of capacity for complex searches and in-depth packet analysis. It uses the standard pcap file, so it can export to and import data from other applications with ease.
Cons
Copy-paste has never been implemented quite right, other programs have better application-specific filters and parsers (although the ability to export pcap files makes this fairly irrelevant).
Summary
Wireshark in all its incarnations is one of the oldest and most widely-used packet-sniffers available. It is a tool that every network and security administrator should have on-hand. Its also a great starting place for people studying networks to get a better grasp of what packets traverse certain parts of a network, and why.

Version: Wireshark 1.2.1
Pros
It does exactly what it was made to do. capture packets, identify the protocol and you can search on virtually any criteria.
Cons
There isn't much to dislike.
-
"Excellent source of networking details."
Version: Wireshark 1.1.2
Pros
Strong filtering capabilities. Colored conversations easily seperate information. Detailed drilldown capabilities. Now supports wireless traffic as well as wired.

Filtering language is not intuitive.
