CNET Editors' review
WinAmp 5.3 took some long-needed steps to improve the old-school media player, with support for AAC encoding, CD burning, and a robust file-management system. WinAmp 5.56 ups the ante with strong support for portable devices, including iPods, the ability to sync non-DRMed files to your PC from your device, an optional new interface layout and a built-in browser for media discovery.
We liked that clicking on an artist's name will get you related headlines and Web sites in a separate pane. There's also Podcast support, device synchronization that lets you tweak the sync list while in progress, and continued support for AOL's excellent Shoutcast. The new Bento layout is worth mentioning, too, because it gets the venerable llama away from the old modular format. The joined panes for the browser, media player, artist list, album list and more make WinAmp instantly more visually appealing. There's also an Auto-Tag feature, which will download metatags from the Gracenote database, and Winamp's proprietary music scrobler called Orgler, with links back to AOL Music.
If you want MP3 encoding and full-speed CD burning, you have to shell out $19.95 for the Pro version. However, there are other problems. Automatic album art download support is spotty at best. More importantly, there are some stability issues when playing videos, and occasional program crashes were far more common than they should be.
WinAmp 5.56 is no iTunes killer--not yet. It has become, however, a strong alternative and should be of interest to those looking for something with more meat on its bones. Llama meat, that is.

"Could be GREAT"
Version: Winamp 5.623
Pros
Easy to learn, lots of add ons .....
Cons
FREAKIN THING CRASHES WHEN i WANNA ADD MUSIC!!!!
Summary
I have been a Winamp user for YEARS and YEARS, but now it crashes when I try to add music. I went to blogs and Winamp support, etc .... and got an ATTITUDE from support! OMG!!!! Do NOT download Winamp until it makes a major announcement that its bugs have been FIXED and that an attitude will not be evident from SUPPORT. Winamp, there are OTHERS who are just as good as you. There does not need to be ANY ATTITUDE when YOU have caused a freaking PROBLEM.

"A Big Disappointment"
Version: Winamp 5.623
Pros
(Provided it works) Adaptability. Customizable. Good sound. Nice Idea.
Cons
Fell apart as soon as I put a skin on. (Was in one player part and then it turned into 2 parts-player and list) Tried to change skins and couldn't. Would barely fit on my screen as size changed. The podcasts are not the greatest.
Summary
Very disappointed. It appears as if it's a hit or miss with some people. It's a great idea and could be fantastic if bugs are fixed and the Developers continue to update issues. Sad but I obviously need to uninstall it.

Cons
yea it's easy to use and works well out of the box.
Summary
Pretty good community support as well.

"Forget it does not work on ANY version of Windows-"
Version: Winamp 5.623
Pros
None.I tried it on both Windows XP and Windows 7 and it crashed with an error message from Windows when I tried to play videos.Error message from Windows on both Windows XP and windows 7 was"Winamp has had to close.Send error report, don't send."
Cons
Just about everything. It tries to install unwanted toolbars including a registry cleaner which I declined and tries to change your homepage. The media player itself is the ugliest media player I have ever seen. It does not play videos and is nothing like Windows Media Player,VLC player and the other players I have used. Not very user friendly either and even after I uninstaled it leaves a lot of files behind, which I deleted.
Summary
Well I think I have said it all. This is the worst media player I have ever tried. It does not work on any version of Windows it crashes. So I uninstalled it. If you are looking for an alternative to Windows Media player use Gom player or Mirro or Media Player Classic the old Zip file install version(not the Home Cinema version.)At least they work and you know where you are with them. CORRECTION-the version of Winamp I tried on Windows XP and Windows 7 was WINAMP LITE-which is different from the full version.
Updated on May 23, 2012
This time I tried the full version and it is very good as an audio player. It has lots of visualisations not unlike that of WMP9 which as you know, you do not get on WMP11 or WMP12. And of course on Windows 7,Windows Vista and Windows 8,WMP 11 or WMP 12 is your only option as you cannot run WMP9 in anything but Windows XP.So I tried the full version of Winamp on Windows Vista,Windows 7 and Windows 8 and it is great for audio files. You get very nice visualisations like on WMP9. But there is still a problem with the video files. Winamp only plays WMV video files not AVI or FLV.So if you want a good audio player with visualisations,Winamp is the right choice. But you still need to use another media player to play most video files as Winamp only plays WMV video files. The good news is that Winamp works perfect on Windows 8.
Updated on May 23, 2012Well Winamp does work on Windows 8,which is good news. As well as all other versions of Windows. But I see it more as an audio player than a video player. As it plays all audio files but very few video file formats. But you have your other media players for that. But if you want an audio player with visualisations like that of WMP 9 and earlier versions of WMP.Which you don't get on WMP 11 or 12 and also most other media players don't have visualisations. Then Winamp is for you.
Updated on May 30, 2012UPDATE- I have just installed updates for WMP11 on Windows XP,which I have just upgraded to from WMP9. And as a result Winamp is no longer working properly. It crashes in the middle of playing a video or audio file. So I have had to now uninstall Winamp. And on Windows 7 I have undergone some media updates from Windows update and I have the same problem. It seems that updates for Windows Media Center or media updates clashes with Winamp. Which is not good, this indicates that there are bugs in Winamp. So it is not a very stable media player. So it looks like I will have to go back to WMP or VLC player.Andrea Borman. -

"Not bad. Lots missing."
Version: Winamp 5.623
Pros
Excellent streaming functions.
Cons
No sorting options for playlists. No last played counter in playlists. Almost impossible to manage large playlists because the sort options found in other players are simply missing from WinAmp.
Summary
The missing playlist management functions are a major drawback. If you want to use the very nice streaming functions you will have to edit your playlists in another program and import them to winamp, which is time consuming and very inconvenient.

"Best I've used."
Version: Winamp 5.623
Pros
Works every time, never locks up my computer, Windows7 64, has 100's of skins, also work on android systems, you get art work to. It can sync with your phone computer or music player. Also has a EQ. with presets.
Cons
The WIFI part doesn't work at all between my computer and phone. Sometimes it takes a very long time sync or fill in missing songs.
Summary
This is the best I've tried and I've tried, Songbird, Itunes, Jetaudio, Windows Media Player, Windows Media Center, VLC media, and Atunes. Atunes is the only other one I like but it too plain looking.
-
"Couldn't get it to run on Windows 7 64 bit."
Version: Winamp 5.623
Pros
I've loved using Winamp for over 10 years, it runs fast and light, has lots of great features, almost never crashed on me (as opposed to the other music players I tried).
Cons
It won't run on my computer now. Can't find a solution and I have no idea why it crashes when I run it.
Summary
I'd hate to have to go find another media player......

"Not bad, but could be better"
Version: Winamp 5.623
Pros
A free nice looking media, but to improve.
Cons
Could be more user-friendly.
The equalizer is not really giving a full satisfaction, it could be improved.
A bit of a fight finding the different options when you don't have the will or the time -
"did not like it because it was not very intuitive"
Version: Winamp 5.623
Pros
Can not think of one good reason why this unit is so popular
Cons
Winamp basically blows. It does not present itself as a very understandable means by which to organize a music archive.
Summary
Could not stand it shouting out something about "kicking the lama's ass" every time I logged on.
