Editors' review

WinAmp 5.3 took some long-needed steps to improve the old-school media player, with support for AAC encoding, CD burning, and a robust file-management system. WinAmp 5.56 ups the ante with strong support for portable devices, including iPods, the ability to sync non-DRMed files to your PC from your device, an optional new interface layout and a built-in browser for media discovery.

We liked that clicking on an artist's name will get you related headlines and Web sites in a separate pane. There's also Podcast support, device synchronization that lets you tweak the sync list while in progress, and continued support for AOL's excellent Shoutcast. The new Bento layout is worth mentioning, too, because it gets the venerable llama away from the old modular format. The joined panes for the browser, media player, artist list, album list and more make WinAmp instantly more visually appealing. There's also an Auto-Tag feature, which will download metatags from the Gracenote database, and Winamp's proprietary music scrobler called Orgler, with links back to AOL Music.

If you want MP3 encoding and full-speed CD burning, you have to shell out $19.95 for the Pro version. However, there are other problems. Automatic album art download support is spotty at best. More importantly, there are some stability issues when playing videos, and occasional program crashes were far more common than they should be.

WinAmp 5.56 is no iTunes killer--not yet. It has become, however, a strong alternative and should be of interest to those looking for something with more meat on its bones. Llama meat, that is.

    "Too cluttered and unorganized"

    July 06, 2014   |   By tomysshadow

    Version: Winamp 5.666

    Pros

Can play FLAC and be customized a lot. For those of you who like libraries, this is a primary focus of Winamp, and it also has the ability to play CDs.

    Cons

I never really liked Winamp, I find it to look too old overall and the library/playlists I don't like. I'd prefer to organize my files using Windows Explorer than within the player I use. But it is a matter of personal preferences. It is also awful for watching videos, which doesn't work half the time. The default skin could also be changed so... *shrugs* the catchphrase is also inappropriate for children.

    Summary

It has had a comeback, but I still don't like it all that much. Depends who you are though.

"whatever happened to the audio converter?"

    May 06, 2014   |   By VinylMuseum

    Version: Winamp 5.666

    Pros

Winamp has been around for a long time, and it used to be the only app I used for playing music on any of my computers. The free version used to include the audio converter.

    Cons

The free version doesn't have the audio converter no more I see, and because of that I will not download the new version for any of my computers until they add the audio converter back to the free version, and I will give it five stars instead of three, because if I use a free player, I'l just use Itunes that come free with Mac. But for my microsoft computer I need an audio converter, and winamo was the first app I thought of until I found out the audio converter is not available no more. I guess you have to pay 20 dollars to have that feature. Thanks winamp, it doesn't kick a.. no more since the converters not available.

    Summary

ADD the audio converter back to the free version. & I will come back and give 5 stars plus rewrite my review, p.e.a.c.e

    "comes with malware"

    April 17, 2014   |   By leighssneaky

    Version: Winamp 5.666

    Pros

It does work once you remove the malware.

    Cons

It comes with conduit (and no option to not install conduit), which is malware that hijacks your browser. It's difficult to remove. It involved running Malware Bytes and then changing some settings manually, as well.

    Summary

Download this program from somewhere else.

    "Best music player all around"

    December 09, 2013

    Version: Winamp 5.666

    Pros

Very good sound. Low CPU use.
Leave your files where you placed them and never try to re-encode them. Only change the tags when YOU do explicitely change them. This is oposite the the default behavious of the mamoth iTune (over 300 Mb) that insist on re-encoding all audio to AAC, relocate and retag your files on play...
Can handle libraries and playlists containing upward of 100000 tracks.

    Cons

None that I can think of.
