Winamp is a multimedia player made by Nullsoft. It is skinnable, multi-format freeware. It also now plays streamed video content, both live and recorded, authored worldwide. Winamp 5 includes support for classic Winamp skins and Winamp 3 (Modern) skins; a fancy new Modern skin; the same classic skin for people who want the Winamp 2 feel; a vastly more powerful media library; CD-ripping support (AAC@2x in the Free version, MP3 at unlimited speeds in the Pro version); CD-burning support (limited to 6x in the free version); advanced title-formatting logic for file types that support it; huge AVS updates; support for playback of AAC and VP6 in NSV files/streams; global hot-key support; a new Signal Processing Studio DSP plug-in; options for disabling plug-in exception-handling for developers; a new Winamp icon; and the addition of XP manifest.xml to winamp.exe.

Version 5.34 adds Unicode filename and track support.

Nullsoft still has some ground to make up after the poorly received Winamp 3, a dwindling user base, and stiff competition from Apple iTunes. Winamp 5.3 is a huge step in the right direction, with support for AAC encoding, CD burning, and a robust file-management system.

The 5.3x versions have made small but interesting changes, such as FLAC encoding and decoding, CD text reading, support for Windows Mobile devices, and additional filters for the album and artist panes.

We like the Internet TV feature, which provides music videos and live concert footage, although Singing Fish search is less than reliable. Another eye-catcher is the excellent collection of visualizations. The massive catalog of Winamp 2.x and 3.x skins still work with this latest version. The free version is feature-rich, but if you want MP3 encoding and full-speed CD burning, you have to shell out $24.95 for the Pro version. Winamp is one of our all-time favorite players, though, and version 5 renews its promise.

  "This version is one of the best media player."

  Pros: It supports the most video and music files on the planet. It has also a user-friendly interface, customizable skins and has a great visualization. No crashes so far since I installed this version.

  What impressed me most is that it can support many playlist types and it integrates best with my Smartphone and Ipod...I can easily manage my media files then.

  This will not hog your memory RAM and it comes up with a built-in help packed in a bit 6.44mb...this is not a disk eater!

  And best of all, this is free

  Pros: good interface, will play more diff types of file than windows player. has good library functions.

  Cons: you have to pay for pro ver for it to rip to mp3 format.

  "Great Media Player"

  Pros: Winamp can be considered as one of the best in the market. Sound-output is great. Easy to customize playlist and handling media content on it's own media library is a breeze. Milkdrop can be dazzling and lots of support for Audio files. Also supoorts majority of Video files. Pro version has the abilty to convert media files, burn to CD and RIP to MP3 Format.

  Cons: While majority of video files are supported, there is absolutely no support for .AVI Files. I got lots of DVD Movies in .AVI extension. Sad to say I can't watch them in Winamp. I have to use Windows Media Player or Cyberlink Power DVD for this videos. Winamp is great with all kinds of audio files but not with video files
