Nullsoft has a lot of ground to make up after the Winamp 3.0 debacle, a dwindling user base, and stiff competition from Apple iTunes. Winamp 5.3 was a huge step in the right direction, with support for AAC encoding, CD burning, and a robust file-management system. Finally.

Winamp 5.3.1 makes some small but effective changes to its predecessor. In addition to playlist syncing for portables and a More Info feature that shows information about the currently playing track, we get a more stable, less-crash-prone environment for MP3s and podcasts and CD-text-reading support. We also love the Internet TV feature, which provides some great music videos and live concert footage, although the Singing Fish search is rife with mislabeled files. Ostensible rock-concert footage turns out to be, on more than one occasion, unlabeled pornography.

Another eye-catcher is the excellent collection of visualizations. The massive catalog of Winamp 2.x and 3.x skins works with this new version. The free version is feature-rich, but if you want MP3 encoding and full-speed CD burning, you have to shell out $14.95 for the Pro version. Winamp is one of our all-time favorite players, though, and version 5 renews its promise.

    "Highly recommended"

by dragonquest on June 23, 2006

Pros: I've been using Wimamp for quite a long time now, and I think its safe to say that its one of the best media players out there. First, its free (except the pro version) and supports a lot of audio and video formats. The media library gives some really interesting options and statistics. Besides searching for media, you can also clean up your library from time to time to remove deleted entries. And the playlist absolutely rocks. Its search feature has an enqueue option which is a lifeline for music lovers. The keyboard shortcuts are pretty neat and logical. Since its so popular, it has a huge collection of elegant skins and useful plugins. Plus you have a great internet radio feature, and more often than not, you'll find decent songs being played.

Cons: Its getting heavier on the system with every version, but its still decently lightwieght. Its not a recommended option as a video player, though it supports a large number of video formats. Some features are only available in the pro version which is not a freeware.

"The best just got better !"

by prakashakshat on July 2, 2006

Pros: i believe that anyone who has seen a mp3 file in his life must have used winamp. it is one the oldest and most updated mp3 player in this universe. its ease of use is simply superb. the layout/design is little outdated but it makes it simple and easy to use. it is very light on resources and very stable. the installation and download size are very small , making it ideal for old computers. winamp supports a large number of file formats from audio to video. its search function is the best in the market. its playlist shows varity of information and can be easily sorted/customised. since it is completely free and highly popular many innovative skins are available on net. it also has radio feature which alows you to listen ltest songs live. this mp3 player simply ROCKS ! use this and you will never regret.

Cons: interface can be improved. visualizations should be made more ummm... beautiful. overall there are no major cons in this application.

    by trumpetman1433 on July 16, 2006

Pros: This free program is my favorite for streaming audio/video. User-friendly UI, and tidy library are also nice.

Cons: Seems to eat more resources than others but generally good.
