This program proves good things do come in small packages. While WinSettings focuses on protecting your online privacy and security, you also can use it to control screensavers and wallpaper images, change tray and system icons, customize start-up and shutdown routines, and establish background music.

The straightforward interface provides access to all the options through a program icon in the system tray or via the Control Center's tabbed interface. Along with its interesting and useful system settings and history cleaners, it includes unexpected features, such as a screen-capture utility and a Web pop-up blocker. The excellent File Associations tool offers all the tools you need to view and set active icons for each file type, as well as choose default actions, right-click options, and default programs. We used it to repair our Adobe Acrobat file association, which had broken while we were testing other software.

With its potpourri of functions, WinSettings should meet the needs of most power users.

WinSettings is a Windows system tray utility that protects your online privacy and security, selectively cleans up unwanted tracks left on the computer, lets you gain more control of your Windows Desktop, and make better use of acquired multimedia contents. All functions can be accessed via right clicking on the program tray icon. It automates the clean up process so that the computer can be guaranteed free of surfing tracks at start-up, a feature not available in Windows. It also lets you clean up all tracks quickly at any time with just a single click, another feature not available in Windows. WinSettings allows you to clean up your Web surfing tracks, including AutoComplete data such as passwords, forms, cookies, history folder, typed URLs, cache, Documents menu, and temporary files automatically or on demand. The latest version offers you 29 options to clean up your tracks.

It is also a screen capture utility with automatic capture and e-mail options. The latest version offers you 16 ways to capture, e-mail, or save screens. You can also quickly change Windows style and appearance, play background music in a variety of formats including MP3 with your own play lists, create a screensaver control, analyze disk usage, and quickly change file association.

The new WinSettings Image Lab feature offers you all the basic tools that you need when working digital images, from convert, crop, print, and resize, to one-touch editing tools, such as enhance, contrast, and sharpen. You can even add formatted text annotation to your screens or photos. You can use the integrated e-mail tool to e-mail your edited or annotated image with one click.

Version 5.1 adds the additional Clean up All URL option to clean up typed URL as well as the hidden (AutoComplete) URL tracks left on your computer.
