Web of Trust (WOT) for Internet Explorer provides users with a simple meter for gauging a Web site's danger level. With easy to read warnings, this program only leaves one thing to chance with your safety.

The program does not have anything to offer on your computer's desktop because it embeds itself into your Internet Explorer browser for quick access. Depending on the Web site you visit, the program's icon turns red, yellow, or green to illustrate the danger level. Clicking on the icon displays a chart showcasing Trustworthiness, Vendor Reliability, Privacy, and Child Safety. The warnings are intuitive and should not require a trip to the Help file to understand. The program functioned well for our tests, glowing green for popular news sites and red for less reliable pages. Our only complaint is that users must dig into the settings menu to have WOT stop a dangerous site from opening on your computer. So until that time, concerned users may be exposed to potentially harmful sites. However, once this is activated, the program does a great job of warning you and providing the option to continue or stop. WOT also provides interesting features that allow worldwide users to rate Web sites for danger, thus creating an online community of like-minded people.

With a simple interface, easy-to-understand functions, and interesting features, we found this freeware to be a helpful download for users looking to increase their online security.

"mywot is corrupt"

June 02, 2012  |  By ricoact

 |  Version: Web of Trust for Internet Explorer 20110704

Pros

It is in theory a good idea.

Cons

In the hands of men without integrity it has become a dangerous tool for political agendas and plausible extortion

Summary

Over a year ago I became aware of this company by virtue of FaceBook as my corporate domain had been 'anonymously' ranked RED and FaceBook was blocking it from their 900 million members. To say I was shocked by this is an understatement.

I joined (2 accounts) over a year ago with Mywot and abandoned the first one as it was setup as an anonymous account and set the second up as me and the owner of over 400 domains and several online businesses.

As I discovered the 'nature' of mywot, I became more critical of the system and was immediately banned from the system. After more than a year passed I signed up again, this time with my Facebook account as me.

During that year of 'no mywot account' I studied and documented the rankings, the forum, the 'top' meritocratic members, the interaction of the mywot forum. My goal was to become an expert on "mywot" from the outside.

In February of 2012 I gathered a rather large group of my subscribers and friends and we signed up to 'mywot' and began ranking sites as mywot's FAQs instruct. In this process we also ranked our sites positive to push them into the green and into the green they all went until on March 09, all the sites my rather large group had ranked all lost all ranking at all as if we had never ranked anything. Obviously Sami flipped the switch making my groups ranking ability inert. Then shortly after that I was banned again.

About a month later I began a campaign to criticize 'mywot' on this forum and then pointed to my 'wavefour.com' domain for additional documentation to back up my criticism of Mywot. I did this to get Sami to show his 'hand' so to speak to see if in fact he would retaliate. It only took 6 hours and my domain was wrecked into RED ranks. About a month later every domain I own is now wrecked and destroyed by Sami ranking them all into deep red.

BTW: This is all documented not just by me but 3rd party observers as well. Some of this documentation has already been uploaded to YouTube.

It is plausibly apparent that Sami Tolvaren uses his back office access to the Mywot Ranking technology to manipulate ranks as he sees fit. (The man behind the curtain)

It is plausibly apparent that Sami Tolvaren, offers positive manipulations of your ranks by him for large fees. He has many accounts with one on Freelancer. He will tell you he does this to catch people trying to pay bribes to protect their business from these attacks.

It is plausibly apparent that Sami Tolveran redefines Trust to actual be popularity or LIKES. Where the definitions of TRUST, VENDOR RELIABILITY, PRIVACY and CHILD SAFETY on the MYWOT site, actually have nothing to do with mywots ranking politics.

The fact that FF and Facebook partner with and by doing so endorse 'mywot' also makes them culpable for Sami's plausible criminal behavior. If and when the RICO civil action and criminal actions occur, the fact that FF and Facebook have deep pockets will defiantly inspire aggressive attorneys to consider filing suit and soon.

"Deceptive, to say the least"

June 01, 2012  |  By gfmats

 |  Version: Web of Trust for Internet Explorer 20110704

Pros

Nothing really, complete failure.

Cons

They promote it as a plugin that shows us how much "people" trust websites as if people would visit red websites to review them and rate them. No, this is a community of losers who don't have anything better to do than to use a WOT mass rating tool and rate thousands of websites poorly just because they'll never run an internet business or a website because of their low intelligence. WOT is a Web of Trolls and has nothing to do with the trust. I was visiting all websites marked as red or blacklisted, and all of them were safe. My favorite gaming and forum websites were all red, the websites I'm attending for past 4-5 years. WOT is a complete failure.

"Gives you some sense of security."

 |  Version: Web of Trust for Internet Explorer 20110704

Pros

I'd rather have it installed on my browser than not. Gives you a pretty good idea of whether or not to click on or go to a site. I especially like the little green, yellow or red circles it has next to sites friends post on Facebook. Many times those questionable sites have been posted by hackers posing as friends.

Cons

There are several sites that I truly love and use regularly that have been very unfairly rated as questionable or dangerous. These sites are perfectly safe and the good ratings and comments I give the sites do not seem to raise their rating.

Summary

I would recommend downloading it.

"The kings of online extortion and astroturfing"

November 24, 2011  |  By Cowicide

 |  Version: Web of Trust for Internet Explorer 20110704

Pros

Web of Trust lawsuit in progress.

Cons

Not transparent. You can find your safe, legal website with no malware is ranked poorly and you can't see who or why it's ranked low and there's no obvious way to remedy the problem until you slowly realize that they'll take your money and give you a "badge" on your site like mafia protection.

My only hope is they lose a major class action lawsuit and at least some of the damages they've brought to legitimate businesses are recouped.

"Not as reliable as you might think."

September 08, 2011  |  By yodahacker

 |  Version: Web of Trust for Internet Explorer 20110704

Pros

Does seem to rate some sites accurately.

Cons

- Their scoring system is weighted (Not everyone's score is worth the same).
- WOT allows some of its members to use mass rating tools (They can enter in several hundred websites and put the same comment for them all).
- Inaccurate ratings

Summary

With the research that I conducted on WOT, I've learned the following: Their scoring system is weighted....Which means that some of it's member's scores are worth more than others when determining the overall score for a website. The more website's you rate the more your score is worth. Also, WOT allows some of its members to use mass rating tools (With this tool they can enter in several hundred websites and put the same comment for them all). This doesn't seem to very reliable way to rate a website. I've actually seen a website where everyone gave it a great rating based on personal experiences that they had with the company/website and one person (using a mass rating tool) gave it a negative rating because he saw on a blog where someone recommended it and he considers that spam. Because he uses their mass rating tool.... his score is weighted heavier...and the site now has a "bad reputation". It completely ruins the overall rating for that website. I checked out his WOT profile and his motto is "To p#ss off some geeks priceless, for everything else there's MasterCard." With this being his motto it doesn't seem that he has the best intentions when rating sites. You can tell that a mass rating tool has been used when beside their comment there are 3 green circles joined..

I've also read in forums where people have stated that a porn site had a good reputation with high scores on child safety.... Go figure.

Bottom line - If you use WOT... I would still be cautious even if it gives a positive rating. If it states that the website has a "bad reputation" read some of the comments to see if the majority of them are negative/positive and if anyone has used their "mass rating tool" before making a final decision. Unlike WOT, I would go with those users ratings/comments which deal with personal experiences (good or bad) they have had with the website when making your decision. I have to say that I still use WOT but definitely do not rely 100% on it's rating of a website because of it's weighted scoring and allowance of mass rating tools. I hope you find this info useful when using WOT.

Pros

WOT is an excellent way to keep to the good side of the internet. It is a small, elegant little add-on that warns of dangerous sites.

Cons

In two years of running WOT I have found no problems with the program

Summary

This is one of the top two extensions I install on every computer I repair.
