CNET Editors' review
There are any number of programs now that can download FLV files from YouTube and other Flash videos sites. Video Download Toolbar is a straightforward utility that makes downloading a snap. It works so quickly and with so little hassle that at first we weren't sure that it was working at all. But opening the downloaded files revealed that Video Download Toolbar had done everything it promised
One great thing about this program is that it works with multiple browsers; we tried it with both Firefox and Internet Explorer, and in both cases it worked fine. Video Download Toolbar can be set to download videos automatically or manually. Clicking the program's browser icon brings up a list of downloaded videos, along with buttons allowing you to play the video, open the file location, convert the video to other formats, or convert the video to MP3. Don't get too excited about these last two options; clicking on either one of them will prompt you to download additional software to carry out these tasks.
You'll also need to have your own media player that's capable of handling FLV files; not all of them do. Video Download Toolbar has a handful of options to customize its operation, but since it's such a simple program, there's really not much to customize. An online Help file offers extremely brief instructions, but most users should be able to figure the program out without too many issues. Overall, we found Video Download Toolbar to be an extremely easy option for downloading FLV videos, and we recommend it.
Video Download Toolbar installs a desktop icon without asking and leaves a folder behind upon removal.

"Malware! Hijacks your homepage and search engine"
Version: Video Download Toolbar 2.7
Pros
None. This thing is total junk!
Cons
Thing sneakily installs various unwanted and intrusive plugins for your browser, changes your default browser to some pathetic app they wrote and hijacks your homepage and search engine. You can't even change the homepage by going to setting, because they've somehow used administrative setting to block me from changing the homepage on my own computer, which I have admin privileges on. I can't believe how sly these people are. I'm stilling googling and trying to figure how to undo the damage these people have done.
Summary
This is borderline malware, DO NOT Install! I can't believe CNET would allow this thing on their website. I trusted CNET to filter out malicious software like this.

"WARNING this software has malware"
Version: Video Download Toolbar 2.7
Pros
none unless you like your Internet Explorer settings hijacked in a way that you can't change back to your preferences.
Cons
Malware. Changed my home page in Internet Explorer and won't let me change it back. Worked great until the update a couple of days ago and now it's MALWARE CITY.
Summary
This program should be banned from cnet. They have changed the software and is now malware.

"Junk, DO NOT INSTALL"
Version: Video Download Toolbar 2.7
Pros
No pros. Worste program ever
Cons
Full of Malware. My Internet Explore 9 is still not working as good as before install. I may need to reinstall my Internet Explorer after I installed this infected program. CNET sucks.

"A Possible Threat To Your Privacy"
Version: Video Download Toolbar 2.7
Pros
The features list looks great, but I did not get a chance to try it in practice.
Cons
If you are vigilant you can avoid installing unwanted toolbars by un-ticking boxes during setup, but the major objection to this application is the necessity of installing WinPcap at the same time. I cannot understand why a network analysis tool is necessary to download videos, and I suspect that it may be used to send information about the users downloads to advertisers. I declined to install it when prompted, and I found that the Video Download Toolbar wold not function as a consequence.
Summary
From the features list it looks like one of the best video downloaders out there, but if you value your privacy I would not install it if I were you.
I may be wrong about Video Download Toolbar. When I encountered a setup program for WinPcap I was suspicious about the purpose of packet sniffing software being used in conjunction with the main application. This could have been due to my ignorance about how video downloading technology works. I have since encountered an application called Coojah which explicitly analysis your computer's network traffic in order to identify the URL of video streams. Therefor WinPcap may have a legitimate function in conjuction with the Video Download Toolbar.

I did express my suspicions in the message I sent when redirected to a webpage where you could give your reasons for uninstalling it, but after reading their privacy policy I gave them a false email address . If this application works as advertised it would be one of the best video downloaders out there, which makes me wonder why it is free. Perhaps they get a payment every time someone inadvertently installs one of the spyware toolbars. -
