When it comes to video files, it seems like nothing is ever as easy as it should be. VLC Media Player offers a one-stop solution, supporting playback of a whole slew of file types, including AVI, OGG, MP2, MP3, MP4, DivX, and DVD. It can even function as a streaming-media server. Its open-source roots mean the program evolves quickly, with new features and fixes released frequently. Though the skinned mode perks up the interface, the program suffers from unpredictable behavior when it's activated. Also, the basic task of opening a file is far more confusing than it should be; the program gives you several options, including the head-scratcher Quick Open File. Overall, though, VLC Media Player earns its place on any computer with its ability to open just about any type of video file. Watch the CNET video review of VLC media player:

"The best media player, it is my defalt media player"
Pros: It can open mosty multimedia files that can not be opened with other media players ( like Real Player ).
Cons: Rarly some multimedia files could not be open with it ( I said rarly )

"Works, has quirks, it's free... get used to it"
Pros: Works for what I'm using it for.
Cons: Occasional errors that can be cancelled and not effect operation.

Pros: I have the VLC for Mac (Leopard). This player plays everything but there are some bugs
Cons: 1) Resizing the window causes the player control at the bottom to disappear
2) No way to set the window to a size I prefer. Window goes back to default, which varies in size, depending on the program it is playing
3) Fast Forward button is useless. It skips too fast
4) There's a lag when jumping to another scene. Click on the slider to skip ahead and there's a 2 to 3 second lag when the video is distorted. Wish it could be instant.

"Excellent player, had no problems"
Pros: VLC plays movies and vids that QuickTime won't open.
