When it comes to video files, it seems like nothing is ever as easy as it should be. VLC Media Player offers a one-stop solution, supporting playback of a whole slew of file types, including AVI, OGG, MP2, MP3, MP4, DivX, and DVD. It can even function as a streaming-media server. Its open-source roots mean the program evolves quickly, with new features and fixes released frequently. Though the skinned mode perks up the interface, the program suffers from unpredictable behavior when it's activated. Also, the basic task of opening a file is far more confusing than it should be; the program gives you several options, including the head-scratcher Quick Open File. Overall, though, VLC Media Player earns its place on any computer with its ability to open just about any type of video file. Watch the CNET video review of VLC media player:

Version: VLC media player 0.8.6
Pros: This plays many more video formats than Quicktime player. Video quality is often better than that using Quicktime which sometimes fails to play the sound. When problems occur descriptive error messages give one a clue as to what is wrong with a file.
Indispensible for people who simply want to see what is going on in the world through video sharing. With VLC it is now rare for someone to send me video from a conference or interview which is unreadable.
I've been impressed using VLC 8.5 with no problems on my intel iMac or G3 iBook, so 8.6 may simply do better.
Cons: This is not video editing, conversion, or creation software. Fast-forward & reverse are minimally functional, so I often find myself rewatching more than I need to catch the statement that I missed.

Version: VLC media player 0.8.6
Pros: This program turned out to be outstanding! It plays every single kind of video and audio file I have, and what's best is how light and small it is. So it's not heavy on the system resources and starts up almost instantly on my system. (Quicktime always makes me wait )
Even plays VOB files to my surprise, better than power dvd. I am no longer using power dvd because of this.
Cons: Honestly, I am not left for wanting anything else in a player.
The only thing it won't play are mp4 (itunes protected files), but then again, that is why itunes encrypts them that way, and no one has cracked it yet. So, yeah...no cons.

"great player! I can watch and listen videos without any problems"
Pros: because it's easy to download and broadcast almost all kinds of videos
